  • help to choose between defy 3 defy 5 or budget of 50 to 60k road cycle

I plan to go in for a road cycle. my requirement is carbon / aluminium fork. frame has to be aluminium. my budget can cater for entry level road cycles. I don't want to exceed the budget as it is going to be my first road cycle and I am supposed to get used to the cycle. I am currently having a hybrid since the last 6 months. I want to add a road bike. I was thinking of buying a hero hawk and get used to a road cycle, but on second thought I felt I can add that money to a proper road cycle as I am not a rookie now at cycling. kindly give your views suggestions on the defy 3 defy 5 / suggest another brand like trek / canno etc.

I say this almost all the time... If you are just getting into roadbike then it's always best to get a used one entry level bike from someone who is upgrading

There is a page called cyclop in Facebook where you can find good bikes from your area for 25k odd which is a good price for an entry level road bike.

appreciate your reply. i keep track of FB page cyclop since a few months. what ever may be the logic, i have reservations on buying used - anything ( includes car/bike/cycle). no offence it is something like a personal phobia so used is ruled out. i have to buy new with the packing from the bike shop itself. i am going to mix this proposed road cycle with my hybrid regards usage. my hybrid has just crossed 3200 kms in 6 months which is much below par compared to a serious cyclist. with my limited usage only i am buying the road cycle. i am narrowing down to defy 3 around 70 to 80k or trek as second choice ( exceeding my budget above) unless somebody in this forum convinces me otherwise. as of now i am recovering from a bad viral fever so i have time till mid march 2016 before i take the pedal again.

Sir, most of the cycles in a particular price range will be more or less equal. No brand will be a steal deal with respect to the competition.

The reason why Kaushik is suggesting a cheaper used roadie is probably because we see a lot of people buying expensive bikes and soon after putting them up on sale because they didn't gel with the bike.

If you are unwilling to buy a used bike initially, might i recommend renting out a road bike (if possible in TVM) and seeing how comfortable you are riding those bikes. Or possibly borrow a bike from a friend for a few rides.

Also look for bikes with an endurance geometry rather than a race geometry, more comfortable.

Road bikes put you in a rather aerodynamic (uncomfortable) position, much like a superbike/ supersport, takes quite the toll on the back and neck if not habituated. Which is probably less of a problem if one is 18 and more if one is 80
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Well to be honest I'm not here to convince you coz honestly it's your money & your choice. But if you'd like to know, unlike Car/Motorcycle etc Bicycles are pretty basic machines & the only moving parts are the Drivetrain (chainring, Cassette & Chain) & shifters both of which are pretty Bomb Proof & have a huge life & wheels offcourse which only needs re-greasing & truing if need be. The frame as such is passive & has nearly endless life unless it's crashed or really abused.

And usually these things last so long that people get tired of them & upgrade out of boredom or new tech rather than the need to change it. Most will start exactly as yourself who will turn a blind eye the used market & fetch themselves a very basic roadbike for 60-70k. Then once they get into serious roadbiking & listening up to others that what they shelled out was pretty bare-bones & basic & then feel a need to upgrade, this is where they realize that they'll now have to part with their 60k bike for paltry 25-30k odd coz entry level bikes fall higher in depreciation. They also then realize that for the same 60-70k cash they'd have got a much better bike in the used market which even tough a few years old will be much lighter, components much better etc.

                .

last time i rode or rather owned a road bike was hero hawk while i was at jalandhar 28 years back. now the story is different. both Kaushik and Monk are right. I have read through all the posts of Kaushik and Monk in this forum. let me think over regarding using one before buying. i can do maintenance of my cycle as after purchase my montra hybrid cycle has never seen a mechanic till date and all maintenance done by me including replacing the balls of both the pedals adjusting FD /RD etc. ( i have all the basic tools). Only i have to fine tune ( truing) the front wheel which i will do this week. last month i have completely overhauled my basic ordinary cycle by my self - took 2 days but perfect. even i had a wild idea to assemble my road bike but i am keeping it for future. i will be positive on your valuable suggestions and thanks for the same.

Harikeshpk sir imho you dont required a roadbike worth 60/70k unless there is a prestige issue. Even any basic model can fulfill your needs. Plz estimate your use and your requirement and choose the best way to Justice your every penny.
Even most of the members here starts cycling by opting slightly newer (used) bikes and then upgrade rather than burning a big hole in pocket .
I like your view toword the bike . some peoples are really cant imagine to use a second hand bike for whatever the reason , i am also like that.
Any basic roadbike can do the trick for you as your usage will be minimum and care will be more.
Just my two cents sry if i unintentionaly hurt the sentiments of anyone.

you are right. i am trying to re- calibrate my options. advise from Kaushik and Monk were also on similar lines.

i am taking a serious look at montra celtic 2.2 made in india cycle.

Re: help to choose between defy 3 defy 5 or budget of 50 to 60k road cycle

I have almost finalised the purchase. it is going to be montra celtic 2.2. this is going to be my foundation in road cycling. weight is a crucial criteria for me within the budget of around 70k. Defy 5 - 10.9 kg@ Rs 55000 , Defy 3 - 8.9 kg@ Rs 72000 , Celtic 2.2 - 9.8 kg @ 39,900/- . i am already using Montra blues 1.1 hybrid and very happy with it. i had almost finalised defy 3 thinking that a good one is better in the long run. but shockingly the comparison between the defy 3 and celtic was way too similar to ignore even though the weight of defy is less. 72,000/- Vs 39900/- too much. had a difficult time to get the weight of all the cycles. i have also made a comparison table attached as PDF comparing the defy 3,5 and Celtic 2.2.

i am not a cycle racer. i want to enjoy my cycling and improve upon it. At 39,900/- the celtic with the given specs( see attached file) and "Made in India" is too good to be ignored. ( no single company in the world makes all components on their own )

i generally dont believe in selling stuff. probably in one year i will go for another road cycle. the current road cycle can be a backup for me. the advise i received by putting up this thread has helped including my present condition( recovering from fever) else i would be riding a defy now.

facing lot of divergent views on the Montra Celtic. their website is totally not to my liking and uninformative and not updated. on paper it looks good. but no user reviews good blogs nothing. tried to phone some friends and one view was that the actual frame size may not match the sticker on the cycle. also there is no possibility for me here to check one out before buying.

as of now I am again hanging on the balance again between Montra Celtic and defy. I will inform in this forum in about 2 weeks as to finally what I am going to have or purchased.
