  • Trans Am Bike Race-2016 - Tracking Opendro Singh from Bangalore

After riding in many brevets I'm very much surprised to know that there exists a endurance cycling event that doesn't require participation fee.

Yeah you read it right - No outside support. No drafting. No entry fees. No prize money- This is motto of Trans arm bike race.

The aim of event is to ride from coast to coast in USA be it towards east or west, trough the challenging terrains to be at the end all self supported.
Some people do it in touring mode also.

It started on June 4 th and so far many riders rode over 2000 Km in 5 days.

People in Bangalore cycling might have already heard of name Thoudam Opendro Singh. A weird guy with very different views and approach to endurance cycling and racing. It is only after reading his blogs, I got confidence to take part in bliss in the hills event. ( 1200 Km Brevet, the toughest in India). He is riding a btwin sport 1 bike, once again proving that it all depends on rider.

So far he rode over 960 mi ( 1500Km appx) .He can be tracked here. You can read about his preparation and views on event here in his own words

Thoudam_Opendro_Singh - Trans Am Bike Race 2016 individual history by trackleaders.com

There are total of 66 riders and all of them can be tracked in 2016 Live Tracker | Trans Am Bike Race 2016
A lot of drama is going n there. Like bike thefts, missing riders, and people getting lost in route. It is one hell of an event that got me hooked.

Hope many of you here may also like it and attempt in future.

The official website has other info : Rules | Trans Am Bike Race 2016

For those who are curios about costs ,I found this blog where a guy summarized the approximate costs How Much Does it Cost to Do the Trans Am Bike Race?

Re: Trans Am Bike Race-2016 - Tracking Opendro Singh from Bangalore

It feels very sad to share this but Opendro has quit after riding around 1521.8 miles (2447 Km) past 10 days.

His message in facebook reads as below.

"A strong leg with well set saddle I was all set to enjoy the trans am, except for one problem... I picked a serious illness in May followed by pre diabetic symptoms just the week before the race. I have not done the test, but I strongly feel I'm full blown diabetic as of now. I was still working around the carb issues, which gets trickled in many forms. And today, one large sub sandwich, my tummy is paining and my right leg couldn't pedal.
Trans Am was a one in a lifetime attempt for me and quitting never ever crossed me. But I can't afford to risk some serious permanent damage. Really sad myself and sad for those who supported me in every way. But I quit the race and cycling altogether.
Sorry friends, I let you down and perhaps I let down the first Indian entry. I know how I could have danged the impression"

Sad, yet he has inspired and shown way for many to be there.

Meanwhile Leader Steffen Streich rode 2314mi(3724 Km) so far.

                Indeed Sir. Truly inspirational.

Many prayers showed their power and a miracle happened. Opendro resumed. His status says as below :

"Urgent. I want to continue. I don't have anybody's number not do I have SIM card. I went to doctor today morning and nothing serious. My Dinah pain is subsiding. I have been reading in Lander a motel where I stopped. Nathan, please tell my status can be active again."

                and

"Thanks a ton. I will start in the night. Running to some sound before dinner. I saw two more riders here in Downtown motel."

Some kind people helped him to contact race organizers and resume again. His tracker is set to active but it is not yet updated.

I'm so excited and happy to see this message. My belief in statement " it's never over untill it's over " is increasing more and more now.

Leader Steffen Streich rode 2587mi(4163 Km) so far.

Meanwhile, as I'm tracking this RAAM is also started and we have Srinivas Gokulnath representing India in solo category. He can be tracked here.

RAAM is world's most toughest endurance cycling race.

Seems like Opendro is doing good and well.

He is around 1780 mi( 2863 km) and is riding as I'm typing here. Might be midnight. Wondering what climate he is experiencing there.
But it feels so happy to see someone get back and be active after collapsing down.

I found from google that The Arapaho National Wildlife Refuge is in Colorado. He Just crossed that.

Steffen Streich is in lead at 3012.2 mi (4847 km).

I'm not exactly sure but there also happened a time trail long the route and it was posted that the lone participant Jerry Rush has finished it.

Opendro is at 3994 mi now. Just about 280 mi more to finish.

Just to let to know people here that he is completely self sponsored. Couldn't imagine every bit of hard work he has taken to learn about race, routes and spending from his own pocket. wow.

opendro has done it. his own words from his Face book page

                          Quote"

Mission accomplishedIt has taken a week more than I would have wanted. But considering that I even quit mid way due to poor health, finishing it is very satisfying, though it did take away some pride. At many points I felt the guilt of the vacation mode of racing
My wife must be equally relieved as me. So will be my whole family, friends and well wishers.

                          Unquote"

Thanks for posting the update here Harikesh sir.

                            I couldn't post as I'm travelling.

Here are some more updates from Opendro posted in Bangalore Bicycle club google group :

Ha-ha... I was going through the thread to feel good about the amazing praises you guys have for me LOL. And this one caught me. I also thought that mountains in the first half would be the toughest until someone told me that Virginia has the most elevation gain. I was having the course split into 400 km. Look at this split between Kentucky and Virginia. Log from my ride https://ridewithgps.com/trips/9745418This is like 25 Nandi repeats at one go. If that is not tough enough, it is preceded by noon trivial segments in Missouri and Illinois. I also used the brakes only in this section. I think even the leaders clocked less mileage in these sections. Since I recovered from illness, my progress showed as if the course became easier
About the low key affair... That is true. It is not time bound race, and self support. Even winner last year had only himself alone as he finished in the night. At least I planned to finish in day light so that I could get a nice photo clicked by some one
I chose trans am for its simplicity and yet tough challenges. The fact that it is not time bound also helped me when any problem arises in the course. So, in a way I chose the battle where I have the advantage
My bike did excellent except for the last Appalachian climb. The dirt from rain and traffic got the rear derailleur jammed. So, as I left Lexington before the climb, I got WD 40 and cleaned up. It was manageable after that.
As usual, I didn't get punctures. My rear tire was bald after the initial mountain climbs. So I swapped the tires at 2500 mikes. Most people change to new set of tires by this time. They also service bikes as the stay in hostel in Newton bike shop. They even change chain. I had my chain from bliss in the hills I'm probably lucky but I think I knew what I was doing, from experience.

I used hiking socks covered with plastic to prevent air and moist entering in the nights. It was still cold but bearable. I would not say that my ways are perfect. I did what I thought as workable solution for myself with less frills. I wanted to pack less things. You should read my Kolhapur 1240 km brevet report where I wore shoes and gloves in the heavy rain and how I suffered. I'm sure there are better shoes, but sandal was a simpler solution for me.
Many here asked me how I managed the climbs. It is not true that we get power from upward stroke. I use runner calf muscles for the climbs. That works well with platform pedals.

I'm just wondering what kind of man he is !
