  • Need Advice for Bicycle

    Hi All

Wonderful to be in this forum. My first post and my plan for buying my first updated bicycle and I am already excited.

I have been cycling a lot in my school days and also at work. In fact at work it was 10 kms x 2 daily commute (not out of passion but financial constraint). I used to ride the pretty old days bicycle Atlas Goldline. This was about 7 years ago.

I am in my 40s and I am re discovering my passion for cycling. I have been cycling for the past 6 months again on my Atlas gold line. Weekends I travel about 30 kms periodically. This time no financial constraint but pure passion and for fitness. The early morning dawn break cycling sets up tone for my day.

Now I am planning to buy my first 'real' bike. I have been going through lot of cycling articles since last 2 weeks and i believe I know the basics a bit now. Like Road Bike, MTB, Hybrid etc .

I plan to cycle daily about 10 - 20 kms and on rare occasions i wish to cycle 100+ on weekends. I am 6.1 tall, 85-87 kgs. I have never operated any 'geared' bicycle, but after going through the articles, i believe HYBRID bicycle should be my choice as it gives option of both commuting on flat tarmac road and some what off road. Some of the places i cycle even now has not so smooth tarmac road with my Atlas gold line, slightly hilly ups and downs ie city outskirts single village by lanes. Of course, if the slope is bit steep, I now get down and walk the distance before the road becomes flat. Then there are highways i take sometime.

I plan to go for entry level hybrid cycle as of now went to local cycle shop and tried COSMIC SHUFFLE, MACH CITY MUNICH both 21 speed. I plan to try MONTRA TRANCE again after reading reviews.

I have also been warned by the local stores that geared ones are not good and come with high maintenance and advised to go with light weight single speed. I tried MACH CITY i bike and Btwin My Bike, they seems light and much comfortable than my present cycle.

My budget is around 12 - 13K, so i am really scratching my head what to do next. Each cycle dealer seems to promote his favourite or rather the one he gets more money. More than fancy or eye catching, I am looking for simplicity and more importantly comfort. I am not road racer but at times i push myself to increase speed as much as i can.

Some say alloy ones are the best to go for, yet some say nothing like steel if you are looking for durablilty. Techinical terms like Frame size, In seam height, Crank Set etc is getting better of me to be honest.

Sorry for the long post but i thought it is important that I let you know the back ground so that I can receive better decision from you guys. Help this new bie

    Thanks

    Krish

    Query Approved

Test ride the bikes available in the shops near you. And buy the bike that you feel most comfortable on.

Regarding gears. Yes beauty lies in simplicity. And a single speed will be less of a headache. But that also depends on which city you live in and where do you plan to ride. If you are riding in undulating terrain, then you might as well spend for the gears, if not a single speed is your best bet.
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

      Hi Monk

      Thank you so much.

Any bicycle you would recommend in single speed. I believe I will definitely need to go for 'L' due to my height 6ft 1 though some dealers are convincing me even in 'M', you can raise the saddle bar and get to required height.

I live 200 kms away from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Places where i love to cycle most is single village lanes tarmac road, not smooth as highways but still decent enough. Some areas are slightly uphill but that is manageable as i am cycling even now with my normal cycle.

I had visited few shops yesterday.. all popular brands Firefox, Montra, Mach City etc is available. DeCathalon (Btwin) is not there in my city , i have to travel to Ahmedabad for that.

If you can recommend a few time tested ones , it would be great. I do have Mach City Ibike Single speed in my mind at the moment. It is about 5500.00 locally but i am willing to spend more for comfort.

One query, sorry to be dumb. If i go for 21 speed gear but still use most of the time as normal single speed without changing gears will it work? I mean just keeping an option of changing the gears when absolutely necessary? Will it give me the feel similar to single speed ones? I test rode Cosmic Shuffle 2016 21 speed yesterday costing 13K. I found it comfortable.

      Thanks

      Krish

Yes you can ride in one gear only if you so desire! The idea of gears are that you can constantly change them, to make sure that you keep pedalling at the cadence of your choice. Cadence is the RPM of your pedalling.

There is no guarantee that a more expensive bike will be more comfortable. Getting the right size is far more important.

I will not recommend any particular model. But i will suggest to get a bike which is simple! No suspension forks, no disc brakes, no unnecessary paraphernalia. Gears entirely depend on you and your terrain. Personally, even if i was riding on flat roads all the time, i still would not like to ride a single speed bike anymore. I am habituated to riding with gears now!

            Re: Need Advice for Bicycle

            Hi Friends

After test riding lot of cycles over the past week and eating the shopkeeper's head , I have made up my mind on COSMIC SHUFFLE 21 speed Hybrid one with 700 x 35C. I will be purchasing that this Friday, awaiting new stock arrival. Mach City Munich 21 speed was close second, and Montra Helicon was also playing up in my mind but some how, Cosmic shuffle felt better for me especially height factor. It has 28 inch tyres, I am 6ft 1and this bike this seems to fit in beautifully for me or at least i think so.

Attaching image of the bike. I think Cosmic is relatively unknown brand. Guys, let me know if anyone has rode this Cosmic Shuffle or have any valuable suggestions to make. It does really make a difference to be part of this wonderful forum.

Any reviews on the Montra Rock 1.0D 2016 model?

I am looking forward to getting a mountain bike and have a budget of around 17k. Any advice would be helpful.

                Hello Friends

Finally purchased Cosmic Shuffle 21 speed yesterday and had one hour enjoyable ride today. Thank you Monk, Kaushik and others who gave me valuable inputs in helping me decide my purchase. As Monk said, i tried many bikes including some well known brands like Montra, Fire Fox but the moment i rode this Cosmic, i felt i had the right size and went ahead with it.

                Here is the cycle below:

                Regards
