  • Bicycle Recommendation For Overweight Person in India

    Hello

My first post in this forum. Warm greetings to everyone

I am 37 years old and cycling had been a big part of my life till the end of college after which I gave up for various reasons (not health)

I have been an obese person in the past (120+ KG) but I have worked my way down to around 100 Kgs now and still working to reduce it further. Right now, I am thinking of taking up cycling again

My primary use of the bicycle would be for general commuting and of course occasional long rides on city roads.

Would appreciate if you all veteran bikers could recommend me some bicycles that I can use without the constant worry of crushing it down under my weight. I know at 100 Kgs I may not crush it, but being an ex-obese person, I can't help but think of it.

My budget would preferably be around 15K but I won't mind shelling some extra if that's required. My height is 5'10"

    Many thanks in advance

At 5'10" and 100 kg you are overweight, but not unusually so! The bikes will be fine carrying a ton!

The problem with buying cheaper bikes are the wheels. You might have a problem with the spokes breaking every once in a while.

I would suggest buying a Hybrid in the correct size. Do you have any decent cycle stores in your city? Also, if there is a Decathlon, then check it out as well!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

      Thank you for your reply

I am from Calcutta and there are quite a few cycle stores here, a Decathlon is there as well

Any reason for recommending a Hybrid over an MTB?

Also can you recommend some models for me, if that's not too much trouble

I assume you will be riding on the road. MTBs are for dirt. On asphalt MTBs are heavy and slow. Hybrids will be faster and easier to ride!

I see, that makes sense. Any specific Hybrid model that you recommend within my budget?

          Many thanks

Unfortunately, unlike motorcycles. There are a bazillion cycle brand and models. And not everything is available everywhere. So instead of sending you on a wild goose chase looking for some model which isn't available in Calcutta, i would advise doing the opposite. See what is available at the cycle shop near you and then deciding on what is the best among the available options.

Sounds good. I will scout the stores nearby, see what they have and maybe get back for an opinion

Thank you. I appreciate your help
