  • Bicycle commuting in Chennai

    Hi all,

Just wanted to share my experience of Bicycle commuting in Chennai. I have been commuting here in cycle for past two years. My one way commute is about 20km and i used to do it thrice a week. Then after introduction of metro i have combined my transit to partial cycling & partial by metro.

The change when we commute by cycle is obvious, I have experienced a change in my temperament and thoughts after a cycle commute. while commuting in my motorbike / car it was easier to catch road rage; which is almost nil during a cycle commute.

Main Cons of cycle commute are non availabilty of safe parking facilities and refreshment facilities in many of offices. But a talk with HR can do many changes ( In my office they have now provided a dedicated parking lot for cycles)

For the people who have not yet tried it please try it.

    Regards
    Anand

Hey mate, Good to hear you've been cycling to office for the past 2 years. How do you manage to cycle in the summers? I'm just curious to know.

      Cheers!

        Hi Brother,

In summers it may get difficult to ride during peak sun timings, Luckily my usual commute starts at 0730 and evening at 1800. Hence Sun God bothers me less.

Moreover, I split my commute to partially by cycle and part by metro ,thereby lessening my exposure to sun.

And for sweating, I commute wearing a tshirt which i change in my office and some baby wipes and deodorants mask the sweat.

        Happy pedalling

How long does it take you to cover the distance one way?

My one way distance is about 20 km. I usually cover it on my cycle in 50-55 min in morning and in evening 1 hr to 1 hr 10 min

comparing it with my RTR200 commute in which, mornings I take about 35 to 40 min and evenings it is 1 hr to 1 hr 15 min normal due to traffic

The main difference which i feel is the difference in patience levels with which i ride cycle & motorcycle.

The ugly angry man inside me seldom comes out during cycling. and my temperament after reaching home is always pleasant.

Have you had any scary experiences on the road? Where motorists do not see you and end up hitting you?
              What cycle do you use?
Can someone weighing 120 Kilos use a normal cycle or are there some special cycles for people who are overweight?
I'm really interested in cycling, but the carelessness of other road users and my weight is an issue for me.
Thank you for opening this thread.

Usual issues like, slow drivers / MTC buses and wrong side drivers are an issue, but if we are careful enough i dont think it is a severe problem which can deter you from cycling.
I use a basic Hybrid , Montra downtown

Please visit any decathlon / Just buy cycles / probikers (OMR) for trying on cycles. They all have good cycles.

Before starting to commute , be comfortable with your cycle first. Then commute is a breeze.

BTW which area are you from in Chennai?

                    Hi People,

Karthic Ganesan from Thuraipakkam, OMR. I have also brought a basic single speed cycle for my office commute(up & down 10kms).

Like to know if we can all meet up for a meet?

                        Hi Anand,

I brought this cycle after a gap of 20 years. Yet to take it out coz of the situation here. I planned for an alternate transportation for my office commute which is 5km from my home & try to reduce the over grown tummy. Leisure rides! Not sure as of now.

For 5km bicycle is a great choice of transport. Till office starts , you can start using the cycle for micro commutes like grocery/provision shopping to get a feel of cycle commuting in Chennai. Enjoy pedalling.
