  • Astronaut's Pen or Pencil? What is your pick for Zero Gravity?

Have you seen the movie 3 Idiots? Remember the Cuckoo's nest scene at the start of the movie? Remember the question Rancho asked his Dean Viru Sahastrabudhhe?

Its called 2 ways of attacking the same problem. American way was the techie way and Rancho's way was the jugaad way. Both did their job of Writing text on a piece of paper. Just that Russian/Rancho's way turned out to be cheaper to implement.

Which one would you prefer? Along with the pros taking into consideration that what each costs (= an important consideration while engineering ANYTHING).

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

@ Antz: ha ha ....i love to discuss with you.... bro, the scene from 3 idiots is an incomplete joke. the russian method was also wrong, if you write with pencil in space, due to zero gravity, the graphite dust will float for ever and enter your lungs.

@Prince Of course it was the wrong method.

But all the russians needed was one of these. No graphite dust comes out.. ever .

When you write with pencil the dust is generated.. and not just when you sharpen. Also the broken tip can get into eyes and other body parts (this was clearly told in the last phase of the movie when the pen was gifted to rancho!

man.....you do it delebrately...isn't it......the graphite dust is not caused by sharpening pencils, otherwise they can take pre sharpened pencils or simply clutch pencils, the graphite dust is caused while writing.

Oh my god guys! you really don't know about cabin dust-filters? Household ACs have those, both my cars have one. Couldn't NASA afford one for their astronauts? You make a lot more dust by just being in a room (dead cells, cosmic dust) than a poor pencil can make in a lifetime! Silly me, I thought we actually had a problem which was something substantial. There are a hundred solutions to this silly *dust* problem.

And anyways, the astronaut's pen / pencil example was to signify high tech / low tech. It really didn't need so many exclusive posts worth of clarifications how a pencil is dangerous/enough.

ok lets not take this OT ...way too forward but the problem of dust in zero gravity is much more than that on earth, so we can create as much dust as we like and still get away with it. and all the filters in AC and other stuff can not guarantee, that it doesn't reach you before it reaches the filter.

                TADA!!! No longer OT!!!

There is another issue in zero gravity. They need to keep replenishing the oxygen. Its not like you can just open the window and get your dose of fresh air.

It means they are constantly *artificially* ventilating the space-station/shuttle so that the astronauts keep getting oxygen. How hard is it to install dust filters to clean this air? As I already said, Human body already makes a lot of dust in the form of dead skin, falling hair etc.

ha ha ha.. you created a thread....jane do yaar, i am not an expert on this matter, and i guess none of us is... all i was saying was how to ensure dust doesn't reach your nose first rather than the filter.

lock it or delete it.... lets discuss useful issues...lets speculate p375 and d390, its much better that way.

Learned something new today; quoting it for the benefit of the community so as we have the contents even if the originals are deleted

Netlore Archive: Did NASA really spend $12 billion to develop a ballpoint 'space pen' for astronauts to use in zero gravity?

                          Description: Urban legend
                          Circulating since: 1997 (as Netlore)
                          Status: False (see details below)

                          Example:
Email text contributed by R. Daugherty, Sep. 7, 2001:

                          Subject: NASA's Zero Gravity Pen
When NASA first started sending up astronauts, they quickly discovered the ballpoint pens would not work in zero gravity. To combat the problem, NASA scientists spent a decade and $12 Billion to develop a pen that writes in zero gravity, upside down, underwater, on almost any surface including glass and at temperatures ranging from below freezing to 300C.
                          The Russians used a pencil.
Analysis: This story perfectly illustrates the perils of government waste. Pity it's not quite true.NASA didn't have $12 billion to spend on anythingwhen it first started sending astronauts into space in the early 1960s. The agency's entire budget for the 1960 was $500 million; by 1965, it was up to $5.2 billion, still not enough to throw away $12 billion reinventing the ballpoint pen.
Be that as it may, beginning with the Apollo program astronauts did begin using a specially-designed zero-gravity pen called the Fisher Space Pen. The nitrogen-pressurized space pen worked in "freezing cold, desert heat, underwater and upside down," as well as in the weightless conditions of outer space.

It was developed not by NASA, however, but by one enterprising individual, Paul C. Fisher, owner of the Fisher Space Pen Company. By his own account, Fisher spent "thousands of hours and millions of dollars" of his own money in research and development — not billions.

The Fisher Space Pen is still used by both American and Russian astronauts on every space flight, and you can even buy one yourself direct from the company for a measly 50 bucks.
