  • Tata Sky or Dish TV or Airtel TV ??

Dear Friends, i have been using a cable connection till now for my TV, but now i am fed up with the cable guy, main reason is picture quality, useless service, and non-availability of Star Sports (can not watch MotoGP).

So, i have decided to switch to Tata Sky or Dish TV or other similar DTH type service.

I want to know which is better in terms or picture quality, sound quality, service (in case of problems) and cost effective.

Main competitors are tata sky and dish tv, you can suggest other as well.

one more thing, i have a normal samsung dnie jr tv (CRT type), i do not have any HD/LED/LCD tv. so suggest keeping in mind that i have a normal CRT type tv.

which is the cheapest and best option.

i have heard that every DTH service provider has two options- normal and HD, currently i m not very inclined towards HD.

plz suggest, i have approx. 10 days time to decide.

many of you, in fact most you i guess must be using these DTH services.

Well, my household has moved to Videocon D2H HD. Charges for D2H HD are similar to Standard definition feed for other providers, *was* definitely the most VFM when we switched. Now have 3 connections from 1 single dish. Of course, if you opt for SD only, it will come out cheaper than others.

Not had any issues with service yet, recharge can be done online so never had to converse with Customer care or anything.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

Since it cant corner and give good red lining speeds, I dont support your post. Bull**** :P

Videocon has good support compared to TATA and other brands, personal experience. Agreeing with Anant.

I have 2 Videocon D2H connections. Actually it is 1 connection with 2 set top box. I have subscribed to Platinum HD pack. Picture quality, sound quality is good. Service is also better. They pick up call immediately you call their call center. Also issues are addressed well.

However, in Navi Mumbai (Kharghar, Nerul, Koperkhairane ), these Cable Operators are assaulting D2H guys when they come to install. Hence they do not take orders from such trouble areas now.

Check out in your area if theres no such nuisance

Even my vote for Videocon D2H.. been using the Diamond Pack from a long time now.. No problems, initially had some signal issues on rains.. But now it seems to be fixed, quite rare now. Probably at heavy rains.

From my analysis before buying the DTH services, I found...

Tata Sky to be the most expensive, but, way too excellent (would say THE BEST) customer service. So, I hopefully take that their services also should be good; however they're also the most expensive service provider.

Airtel has not so good (you can call them bad, but then wait to hear from me on others, I'll run out of words ) customer service, but, once the issues are ironed out, the system is bullet proof. These guys are better for a good balance of cost versus service. Again, Airtel has almost all the necessary channels as that of Tata Sky

Dish TV has a way too pathetic customer service. I asked if they could speak in English they said yes & still continued speaking in Hindi; while I understood their Hindi perfectly, they understood my English perfectly, but didn't speak back in English & me neither budged to speak in Hindi. For every question of mine they'd to go back & forth to get answers & later I found all of them addressed in their website crystal clear!!!

Sun DTH is less said better; kindly stay off

Apart from these guys, there're Reliance Big TV & Videocon DTH. My neighbor is quite proud with Videocon DTH that provides maximum number of free channels that includes Gujarati, Marathi, Kashmiri, Assamme etc. Reliance DTH, no clue though

            My take is that...
            - Ensure you get one single remote to control the TV instead of having 1 for TV, 1 for home theater, 1 for set top box
            - When buying, ensure to buy a set top box with DVR & HD; you'll have to pay additional for HD (with Airtel & Tata Sky) but you can opt them out too
            - All the service providers offer more or less the same number of channels, so go through them very carefully as who gives you the maximum benefits
            - If you're staying in flat, sorry, you only have to go with the service provider that is channeled to your flat to gain maximum benefit
            - Ensure that channel subscription & the services can begins with a blink of an eye
            - If possible ask if they are willing to swap channels (like stop subscription for Discovery & opt Discovery HD & you can pay the difference)

PS - This is the scenario in South of India that may or may not be applicable in your locality

I was about to close the window and leave home, but came across this, My take is..no no to Airtel DTH. they will sms you generously and screw your peace of mind. I am receiving sms from Airtel even after disconnecting and having informed them years back.

Stay with cable for time being, possibly all across the India they may bring DTH compulsory and your current cable operator would be able to give you Set Top Box/ Dish cheaper with better quality of picture (than cable, can't comment comparing with other providers)

thank you guys for your valuable feedback, all my friends here were of the opinion that tata sky is the best, in fact, only one of my friend had ever tried dish tv.

so now, you guys say that videocon D2H is bettr than tata sky and still cheaper, i will have a look at it.

buddy, my cable operator has already offered me a set top box, but since his service has become really pathetic in last 6 months, i am not interested in him anymore, and more importantly, i feel he is deliberately giving me poor quality, because he wanna sell his set top box. so a cable operator set top box is out of scene.

Been using Tata Sky for ~3 yrs now. No complaints whatsoever. We have an ordinary Samsung CTV and to that extent picture quality is good. No comparison to cable TV anyways. Light years ahead of that :-) Only issue is, when it is overcast service may be disrupted partially. So while watching the last corner of the last lap if weather gods decide to play spoilsport...:-D

A good friend has Videocon DTH and he is happy.

so there is no DTH service which gives free-free channels like Govt broadcast ??
and once i heard my friend saying DTH won;t work if heavy cloud or rains pouring , is it true ??

whole this thread i read videocon DTH cheap .. but how much money for say min channels ??

FIY, motoGP is also shown at Ten Sports. I myself am using a STB from the cable operator himself. But as a suggestion, I will advice u to go for a HD + Recorder set. Now, for now, u don't subscribe to the HD channels, but u never know, when u can upgrade to a Better and Bigger TV. It will be helpful at that Time. And being a recorder, u can see Rossi cornering, anytime u want!

There are Free-To-Air channels in DTH too. But I don't think you can just choose to have FTA and stay away from subscribing to any of their 'packs'.

Yup, under cloudy/rainy conditions service WILL BE disrupted. Haven't kept a tab on how long since I rarely watch TV but I think its not uncommon for outage to last 5-10 mins sometimes.

This is what I said too, but looks like Prince is more interested in finding a ready made answer as which DTH operator to choose he's giving lesser priorities to larger things. Like I keep saying, buying is one time affair, living with it for lifetime

+1. I am using TataSKy for the past 5 years and no issues with the service.Prompt service against request.Expensive and the above mentioned overcast issue is the only annoying factor.
