  • Help regarding bike workshop

    Hello everyone
How many times have you been to an svc and thought damm the service sux...
    Ive had that same feeling
Ie been doing a lot of diys on my bike and know a little bit about the general biking scenarios.
Im thinking about opening an independent bike garage and keeping 3 to 5 mechanics.
We could have a tie up with a spare parts store nearby and help fix bikes for the general public in am as cost effective way as possible making a little profit on the way.
Now from a business point of view do you think this would work? We could have fixed rates for some general work and services.
    2 lifts for bikes
    3 to 5 mechanics
A washibg and cleaning area for bikes
Tie up with parts store nearby
    Fixed rates etc....
Oe would people still go to incompetent mechanics who sit on the roadsides?

And what makes you think that people will know and trust you and your mechanics to be competent. And where will you get such competent mechanics. And why would competent mechanics be willing to work with you and not go on their own?
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Monk's right. We actually can't judge how competent someone is till we see them do their job. You've got to think of a way to back that word "competent".
Else everything else looks ok. I also do my own servicing and general checks unless I need special tools. But opening a garage for all kinds of jobs takes more than that. So if you have the know how and the tools I think that should be enough.
Keep in mind that you might think your good till you've see someone better, so keep the learning mode ad continuous improvement "on". Financially I can't tell you much, just that you'll be I eating a lot and be patient an give the business time to grow and get stable.
Just because you haven't seen it doesnt mean its impossible...expect the unexpected.

        Yes brother
I am no expert I will never be one too
I will always keep learning, the day one thonks that he lnows everything is the day their downfall begins
Also I am persuing engineering so as to gain in depth knowledge
A bajaj service center recently fired a lot of trained mechanics because they would not do 'work' according to the sc managers choice and listened to coustomers far too much, for their work I can personally vouch. One old man worked for the yezdi factory he dosent fix bikes just walks around observes works and guides them, he can barely see... but I know he is a genious when it comes to the machines, the other mechanics have been working in that svc for over 5 years. I know everyone of them personally
And people in my area know I am trustworthy, I have gained that respect atleast.
No one questions me in regards to that, everyone knows that I will not advice them just for the money part of it.
Hence even something small the publicity can travel by word etc.
Good tools and machinery can always be purchased
The spare parts dealer is also a friend.
It is just an idea I have not made it into reality and I know it is not an easy task too, but I look at xbhp for knowledge , incouragement and most of all harsh reality and truth o the indian biking scenario.
        Thank you sooo much

          Re: Help regarding bike workshop

Moreover I will not work on any of the bikes myself
I will just manage the work payments publicity etc and employee mechanics.
Also thr legal side of something like this has to be looked into
Will visit my lawyer for the same
But I am sick of svc managers telling there mechanics scolding them to do work when they spell tappet work as
"Tapperd" and clutch plates as "clash" plates and frame work as "chachis"
Its hesrt reaking to see good mechanics being treated wrong buy a person with zero knowledge about bikes or engines at that....
Moreover some roadside mechs here have to be told what needs to be done what needs to be opened they are so horrible.....

Here for simple work such as an engine oil change etc people visit road side mechs but for something bigger they have nowhere to go except svc..
And a good mech sitting on the side of the road will be less trusted (unfortunately) than a workshop with bad mechanics.
Hece why not make a good workshop with great mechanics? ??

              Re: Help regarding bike workshop

This is coming from a guy who is considered good in fixing motorcycles and fluent in multiple languages so interacting with customers is not a problem.

I tried to set up a bike workshop too, of course, I did not have the capital like you, it was merely a roadside tin shed, but the work was way better than what SVC people did. After like a week or so, my shop was broken into and somebody stole all the tools. Seemed like the local mechanics there did not want any competition, especially from an outsider (Here you lose your "local" status just a kilometer away from home). With your budget and ability to procure spares, the plan could be well-executed and my boy, that's how Lamborghini was born

I wish you good luck for your upcoming ventures and if you need any help regarding pricing and other things, I'm just a PM away.
              I am back!

Hehehe anyone breaking my workshop will be beatup well,...
And sit the work matters not the capital etc.
Knowledge is something that no one can buy sir.
I will work hard, will be visiting a lawyer next week to take care of legal aspects. And for the capital im sacrificing a lot but I dont want to be old and realise I didnt give it a shot!

                  Re: Help regarding bike workshop

Always during bad times like these a saviour is born. It is a great though and a noble deal. There are many who want a good mechanic and in search of them are forced to become a mechanic themselves. This is the sad state. Just go ahead and put up your shop. And you will find lot of support from genuine people who love their bike and want the best service for them. But be careful please consult with your fellow mechanics as to what types of special tools are required for doing a good job. Because often you will find that the mechanics will do some jugaad and finish the job since they are not having the right tool for the job.

Best of luck to your new venture.

                  Cheers

                  Mathews

Smile at everyone you meet and make someone happy.

Use a diffuser with a clean and fresh scent, such as eucalyptus or lemon, to eliminate odors and freshen the space. Reed diffusers are a great way to add fragrance to a large room. ceiling fans for large rooms
