  • Tips need for camping in South India

    Hi mates,
I wanted to go for camping since I got my first bike way back in 2010 but that dream never came true. Finally going for a 3 days unplanned camping trip in South India on Oct 2nd.
I have been to couple of camping trips but they are organized by them and mostly in their own private lands. Though I have pitched in tents packing digging pot to put bio degradable waste carry garbage never got any experience on choosing safe camping site and how to keep wild animals away.
Please do provide me inputs on choosing a safe camping site and do's and dont's of camping in the wild.
We are mostly planning to head towards Nilgiris

If you're not concerned about your safety & dare taking risks, you're welcome to pitch in your tent at any site like Avalanche or Kotagiri that's cut off from hustle bustle city.

What kind of risks? And does one have to get any sort of authorization from the local authorities to do so?

Avalanche and surrounding areas, its a hard task to be camping. If you come to the notice of Forest Officials, then you are in trouble for sure. However you can Pitch tents near Toda Tribal areas, with a kind request. We were denied permission to camp anywhere around Avalanche/Emerald. We found a nice place near Manjoor. One village elder told us to use his non cultivating farmland. Also was kind enough to invite us for a wholesome breakfast. Kotagiri, near the view point there is a temple where you can camp. But the major problem camping around Kodanad/Kotagiri is that home of Tamil Nadu CM. I hope you don't want to spent time with Cops, enquiring like you just committed a crime. On the Whole, its the Cops and Forest Department which is something to be concerned of than locals. Locals are very friendly and go out of their way to help.

The forest dept makes you run around till the time you get tired. Once we reached Avalanche, we were told to go to Sandynulla to camp. the next time we went to Sandynulla, we were denied there and told to go somewhere else.

The only thing that needs to be worried around Nilgiris are Elephants and Leopards, If you are going away from prominent places.

In addition to phanikar's elaboration, in India, if you pitch a tent, you'll be asked 10000 questions by 100s of people starting from your forefather's business to what your sibling will be doing in future!! Pls be prepared to loose a lot of privacy. If you're in isolated location, pls be prepared to face challenges from any anti-social elements in all forms, especially in form of "human"
