    Using Spark in Diesel Engine

    Hi Friends,

    I am having this question from long time ago.

    I knew the reason for not using the Spark Plug ( SP ) in the Diesel Engine is, the boiling point of the diesel is very low when compared to the petrol, so we are not using the SP over in the diesel engine.

    So, my question is, consider

    1. we are using the SP in the diesel engine, so what will happen? It will get easily fired up right. So we can use it right. So the diesel engine will be easily started up even in the higher altitude and also in the winter season....

    Please forward me to some right place, if this question is not right for this forum..

    Since Diesel engines are not generally used on motorcycles. Though some Western Military are trying to develop diesel engines for bikes to be used in the field.
    Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

      Diesel dsnt burn by spark! Higher flash point and very low evaporation rate.
      If you throw a burning match stick in a drum of diesel , nothing happens.
      Only way with certain reliability is to compress it to raise its temp above its flash point. Hence higher comp ration on diesel engines and no plugs.
      Some European manufacturers working on this concept , it might come in future.
      Something like glow plugs & pre ignition chambers in older diesel

        Some Diesel engines are already using plugs. But it's not a spark plug but a glow plug or heater plug. This is for increasing the engine temperature for easy start up.
        I have seen some Mahindra Jeeps are using this technology. Drivers will switch on the heater and wait a few moments/minutes before start up using ignition key. Especially in the cold morning.


        OT: Diesel is injected in a very very high pressure. My father is diesel engine mechanic (Not for vehicles but industrial engines like kirloskar and other). Once while repairing an engine, diesel got penetrated his fingers from the nozzle and mixed with his blood.

          Diesel Engine aka Compression Ignition Engine, which means that, the power in the engine is generated due to the compression of Diesel injected inside the engine.

          Even if you put a Spark Plug to ignite the diesel, it won't happen because of the natural characteristics of Diesel.

          If you are aware about the engine construction of Diesel Engine vs Petrol Engine, you will notice that the Diesel Engine is substantially heavy (in terms of weight) when compared to Petrol Engine. This is because of the natural characteristic of Diesel to ignite itself under severe compression.

          The current generation Diesel Engines are way ahead in terms of technology and they can be started with a crank at any altitude.
          The real beauty lies in throttle's twist!!

          Headlight can be replaced, Head cannot be. Wear a helmet.

            Spark plug vs Fuel injection

            Hi all,
            As per my understanding, spark plugs are used in petrol engine and fuel injection is used in diesel engine. But nowadays fuel injection i used in some bikes like fz v2, r15, etc. What is the difference between normal petrol engine and fuel injected engine?

              Carburetor will basically supply the cylinder with a set air fuel mixture, this ratio is approximated for varied conditions and also there is no monitoring and or continuous adjustments possible. On the other hand it has a longer life and is easy to install.

              Fuel injection (Port FI or Direct FI) will have an electronic system that will calculate engine load and other conditions and will release the exact required amount of AirFuel mix to the cylinder. It will also constantly adjust the mixture as the conditions vary. This provides higher Fuel efficiency and engine performance and lowers emissions (as long as it is specifically set to do so).
              But it is costlier and is sophisticated to install.
