Every day we see lot of people driving / riding recklessly, not wearing riding gear / seatbelts, talking in mobile phones while driving etc. We always think that why these people doesn’t learn. Are good road manners that difficult to follow?
I am not talking about just traffic rules, am talking about good road manners.
- Simple things like
- Following lane discipline and using proper lane with respect to vehicle speed.
- Stopping at stop line in a traffic signal.
- Parking the vehicle giving due consideration to road traffic and pedestrians.
- Using proper indicators and signals
- Not using loud silencers and unnecessarily bright lights inside city limits blinding oncoming traffic.
Why people don’t follow these simple road manners?
One answer which comes to my mind is – They are not taught it.
Most of the people learn driving / riding from their friends or family. And the highest level of education which they get from their teachers is location of accelerator, clutch, brakes and gear. Even use of indicators and RVMs are a mystery to most of them.
This chain must be broken, good road manners must be taught and it must be passed to next generation. But how?
One suggestion from my side is conducting orientation programs in schools where kids along with their parents can be explained about the road manners. Kids shall be taught so that they will pass the message to their elders (reverse manner of what it is practiced right now).
Please pool up your ideas, and let us work for a change.
