  • Road rage and mugging. How to avoid it?

Gone are the days when we used to hear stories of road rage one in a year. Now we here the stories on a daily basis and has so far claimed many lifes. Guys in cages are much more safe from road rage and mugging incidents as they have a protection around them. But we bikers are not fortunate enough as we do not have any protection. Nowadays I hear and have read many road rage/ mugging incidents in banglore Delhi etc. But I believe its everywhere.

Guys please share your views/ valuable suggestions on this forum so as to avoid such instances. Of course one option is to be meek and to know your city well, but it is not always practical. These issues may even pop up when we go for rides to unknown places.

Please remember many of us are just mango men without high level contact/no contacts with local goondas/police.

Having ridden around the country solo, i have always believed in being careful. Keep an eye out for road rage. At the earliest hint of it, pull out of it. A few instances when i have seen tension building up, i have pulled off the road, stopped at a petrol pump/ dhaba. Take 5 minutes. Calm your nerves and ride on. There is no point taking offence!

Mugging on the other hand cannot be avoided. If you get caught in a position where someone's trying to rob you. Give in. At the most they will steal your motorcycle along with your belongings. Its better to lose that, instead of your life. All your stuff will be insured in any case!
Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

Thank you monk for the speedy approval. Its always wise that we pull out of the situation before it gets worse. But sometimes it cannot be avoided. There are people who wanted my get hit and then try to bully you. This is more prevelant in cities like Bangalore, but is existent in all other places as well
Recently we have come across a situation where we were traveling in a narrow lane. The guy on a pulsar was ahead of us and in center of the lane. Two bikes one ours and the other was a pulsar were following him. The guy on the pulsar was honking and the guy ahead was quite irritated. He thought we were honking. We slowed down a bit, but the guy on the other pulsar was still honking. The guy thought that we we still honking and stopped to start an argument with us. Mean while the other pulsar guy went away. We said that we don't honk and the person who honked has just left. He ran like mad to catch hold of the other guy. We could see him arguing with that guy. Such is the road rage nowadays. For no fault of ours we can be forced to get into arguments.
I would like xbhpians to throw some light in a much wider perspective, perhaps citing real world situations and how to manage come out of these situations

Road rage is a big problem these days.. Especially people with a higher end bikes will sure face this issue atleast 2 or 3 times in a long tour.. You will find idiots especially on R15 trying to race with you.. They have no scare for there life and with it put our life also at risk.. I mean what's the point to show off.. A 150cc bike is trying to race with its double amount of cc and horse power, makes really no sense.. Also especially at south side all politicians will have some kind of SUV's with a flag infront of there car and they will behave as if they are the owner of the road... And also road rage happens here mostly because of drunk people.. So we need to have some kind of awareness as this doesn't only risk the lives of the person who is instigating it however it risk's the life of many others on the road...

Avinash bhai good point, however just one thing about the robbing part.. giving in really can;t be a solution in some cases specially when you have a pillion as your wife/Girlfriend/Sister or as a matter of fact any lady... Because these idiots doesn't have any kind of humanity in them so you don't know what they are upto.. I would say not to stop as much as possible ride to a nearby place where you have little bit of crowd in these kind of cases..

Agreed. There is nothing much you can do when on a bike. Cars have an advantage due to their size and are closed. You can attempt to drive past, but when on a bike a mere push can be fatal.

A couple of friends of mine were robbed at gunpoint in busy crowded areas with traffic all around them! They both did the smart thing of backing off and allowing their bikes to be robbed. You can buy a new bike, you can't buy a body!

You are absolutely correct bhai, What happened with Sunilji can happen with anyone and anybody.. No matter how big body one has and no matter how good martial art one knows... infront of a fully loaded gun no one can retaliate.. However my concern is this, a few of riders like us travel as a couple with pillion, so what other solutions can we come up with instead of stopping infront of these hooligans, because I am sure stopping with a lady behind you is not a good options as we know what level these idiots can stoop upto..

Re: Road rage and mugging. How to avoid it?

where (as in which city) was this robbing in a crowded area under gunpoint ? holy f***, this is shocking.

also, politicians and their useless thuggish (most of them) chamchas driving massive SUVs (with their party flag displaying) like they own the road is also a chronic problem here in UP as well (not just specially in the south is my point ), and i am pretty sure it's the same everywhere in our country...doesn't even have to be a big or at least locally influential politician (and his chamchas), just any damn idiot with some affiliation to some party thinks he's the PM of his world and of the road...more than trucks and buses, it's the SUVs that scare the shit out of me when i am on the road, even more so when it turns out the SUV has some political party flag/tag...

something about many (or maybe most) SUV owners though, at least here in UP, politician (and his chamchas) or not, most of them drive terribly scarily for anyone around them...

sorry, i think i went a bit OT.

Exactly this was my point, who gives these chamchas the authority to behave like an owner of the street.. It's high time we take a step towards it.. They not only risk there lives also numerous others travelling on the same road...

One point what I observe is mugging and road rage is happening right in some crowded places and nobody gives a damn.
Remember the knock knock gang in Delhi? They rob you of your valuables right in front of others at a crowded traffic signal.
You are right SUV with political symbol need to be feared upon as we are no match to them

                      Flee or Fight

                      Mugging:
                      Rules
                      1. Do not stop for any reason in deserted area past sunset.
                      2. Flee if you can. If you are still on your bike and can make a run. Do it. It is unlikely you can be chased down.
                      3. Fight if you can. Depending on your capability handling two assailant isnt difficult.
Carry a weapon. I carry a 7" survival blade on rides.
Be prepared to use it(Or atleast act that way). Pepper spray work good too.
                      4. Surrender if you know you cant defend yourself

Re: Road rage and mugging. How to avoid it?

One personal experience of Mugging during my early days of Biking:
Was on the way to Chennai from Tindivanam in NH45. Just before few Kms from Chengalpattu tollbooth, an Old man was asking for lift.

So I thought of giving him a lift and switched on the indicator and almost when I stopped near that old man I noticed a person running from the bushes with a rod or something and swinged it. Luckily my helmet visor (glass got crushed) got the impact and controlled the bike and went on.

Even now I get goosebumps when I try to remember that incident.

From then on I carry a Thermocol cutter pasted with tape inside my fairing.
Stay safe guys. Not everyone is worth towards your humanity.
