  • Listening Music while riding good/bad idea ?

    Hi all xbhpians

This thought is rolling in my mind for quite some time now who better than you guys out here would give suggestions.
I know most of the guys out here listen to music while riding( I too do) but how safe it is ? Wearing headphones and not able to listen whats going around could be quite dangerous not only to us but also to the fellow riders around.
But considering the other side music is the best thing when riding on long and lonely highways.

What could be the safety measures that could be followed that would make us listen to music and enjoy safe riding as well .
Like what volume to listen to , using helmets with speakers or some thing else you people could think of..

Post your suggestions that could help me as well as all the xbhpians.

    THANKS!!
    Xbhpian.

If you really want to listen to Music then make sure its not too loud that you dont hear anything else . set the volume so you also hear other vehicles horns and all . also one should not wear those noise cancelling in-ear earphones .
else its risky to do it.

Hmmm for me a BAD idea to listen to music while on Indian roads. However, i do listen to music while riding... The sound of my engine and exhaust is brilliant music to me.

Listening to music when it is at a decently low volume, so that the traffic sounds are not really muted out is fine I guess.. but in the city, I find that I involuntarily use my ears to listen for any vehicle that is coming directly behind me that I've missed on my RVMs (especially those vehicles which are revving highly ie. they want to overtake, I hear them before I see them so am in a better position to let them pass or whatever). I also find that ppl who listen to music on the road (we're talking about 2 wheelers right) look to be in a world of their own (may not be the case with everyone) but it scares me.. It's dangerous..

On the highway, I guess it may be a different matter, am not qualified enough to comment on that.

            thanks for your reply guys
could some one tell me is it legal/illegal to wear headphones while riding ?

I have seen people wearing headphones with a head band while reading and they dont wear helmets I get extra cautious while riding past them.

Let the bike's sound, the sound of the wind, the sound of the other vehicles around and the sound of the surroundings be the MUSIC while you are RIDING be in in the city or be it the hardware.

It is easy for me to say this cause I am not into music at all and can ride/drive all day long without any music system for kilometers around. Trust me it helps me give all the concentration riding/driving requires plus some.

It only takes less than a fraction of a second for things to go bad so I would never take any chances. As it is our city traffic and for that matter even the highways are so very ill-mannered, we never know what/who may come from where and when and that calls for that extra bit of concentration if you wish you enjoy riding/driving for years to come.

Do one thing at a time. Maybe you can enjoy the ride, go to some nice place and then concentrate and enjoy the music to its fullest. Not sure if I am putting across my point clear enough.

For me Its a not a good idea to listen to music while riding,
I see lot of bikers with headphones and Ipods with music ON wile driving and sometimes I have seen them driving rash too, it may be because of some Fast music which intends to ride speed/rash.

Once I tried using my headphones listening to FM with low volume while riding, I could not ride even for 3-4kms - it was because I was loosing concentration on the road, failed to hear Horns .... many more

i always listen to music while riding but i keep the volume medium i bought a MP3 player specially for that
the main reason i listen :-
                  stuck in traffic jam
people honking with NO reason at all
some how i ride slow because i dont get bored

but i keep the volume low

BTW its illegal to listen to music

Well I find it hard to listen songs with headphones while commuting...

But I cant ride without music while touring or on any highway ride, keeps my mood in control + concentration level is unbeatable...
Well, music keeps stupid/senti thots out of my mind while riding/cornering/ripping, which are very dangerous specially on xbhp rides.

well i do listen to music in my i-pod while riding in the city, but i lower the volume enough so that i can hear my exhaust properly. No problems for me so far..

I feel its a bad idea to listen to music... especially in the city... thats because I dont have Rear views in the city.
While i'm on the highway, I have my rear views fixed( highways are dangerous without rear views). So i listen to music, but at low volumes. As someone said, it helps me improve my concentration a lot.

                              For me :

In city limits and state highways : Strict NO

On 4 lane highways : It ok if we listen music at medium volm.
