  • Cross border blues!

While many of us here are fond of touring, but i could not find answers to some problems related to touring. i'll list out the problems and the experienced guys out here please respond.

1]Do inter state travel needs rto clearance, or any NOC kind of thing?
2]What all papers we must keep while crossing borders?
3]Can we drive KN(or any other state) numbered vehicle in MH(or any other state), is there some kind of time limits exceeding which we may not be allowed to drive some other state vehicle, in the current one?
4]What complications we may have, if i purchase my vehicle from say Maharashtra and intend to drive in Karnataka mostly?
5] Is there a way to avoid any such complications, since in MH vehicles are cheaper than what they are in KN [for ex p180 costs 68k on road pune and the same costs 74k on road hubli]

    I thank in anticipation!

Q1]Do inter state travel needs rto clearance, or any NOC kind of thing?

Not unless you plan to relocate permanently to that state.

2]What all papers we must keep while crossing borders?

License, Registration, Insurance and Emissions certificate. Some cops do not accept PUC from another state so get this done as soon as you enter or just be prepared to pay these morons off...No point wasting time with these half-wits.

3]Can we drive KN(or any other state) numbered vehicle in MH(or any other state), is there some kind of time limits exceeding which we may not be allowed to drive some other state vehicle, in the current one?

Typically 6 months is permissible. But for bikes there is no proof of "entry" date into any state. For a car you can show the toll tickets as proof of entry. This is a bit of a grey-area even I don't understand fully. Most of the time if the cop wants money - nothing you say/show will satisfy him. Just pay up and keep moving. Don't bother with those "Jaago Re" adverts...India is FUBAR.

No complication until a cop catches you and takes your money. Plus you will have the headache of constantly worrying about the havaldars at every signal. I don't recommend doing it - but technically you will be able to get away with it.

Adding to what GSFerrari said, though there is a difference in price of a bike in Pune & in Hubli, majority of it is because of the one time road tax (life tax) structure in Karnataka. If you Buy the bike in Pune and register in Hubli you might save about 2K.
