  • Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) thread

Realised that we dont have an MMA thread here on xbhp. Currently this is the fastest growing sport in America and its popularity has shot through the roof in recent years. I started off watching Pride & K1 on Star sports and have now graduated full time to UFC.

For those who dont know what MMA is all about , Im pasting some material from Wikipedia -
Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.
The roots of mixed martial arts can be traced back to various mixed style contests that took place throughout Europe, Japan and the Pacific Rim during the early 1900s. Modern MMA competition emerged in 1993 with the founding of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Originally organized with the intention of finding the most effective martial arts for real unarmed combat situations, competitors were pitted against one another with minimal rules for safety.[1] Later promoters adopted many additional rules aimed at increasing safety for competitors and to promote mainstream acceptance of the sport

Would love to hear from fellow fans on their favourite fights, favourite fighters and so on.

Does anyone know Krav Maga? It's touted as the best self defence system. It not an art like other martial arts, but it's a pure dirty fighting system, where you aim to hurt maximum. Seems perfect to someone like me who want to learn pure self defence and not any art.

Previously I used to like martial arts (I still do), but Krav Maga takes the cake for sheer applicability.

Good to see that this thread has expanded to include martial arts (which i am not very familiar with) and not just the MMA sport. A few of my fav MMA fighters (in no particular order) are
              1. "Captain America" Randy 'The Natural' Couture
              2. Georges Rush St Pierre 'GSP'
              3. Forest Griffin
              4. Anderson 'The Spider' Silva
              5. Dan 'Hendo' Henderson

Diego was unbeatable for sometime after he got the contract from UFC but eventually lost. More than the other fighter's skills, Diego's overconfidence doomed him.
Edit: Just read in the wiki, He was defeated by Josh Koschek from same Ultimate Fighter season.

They had some good fighters on that season (incidentally the only season Ive watched). Kenny Florian, Diego Sanchez, Josh Koschek, Chris Leben, Forrest Griffin, Stephan Bonnar and Mike Swick have become big names in the UFC.

Dude, watch the final match of the season between Stephan Bonnar & Forrest Griffin. Its widely hailed as the match that put UFC and MMA on the map. Definitely one of the best matches that I have ever seen.

MMA featured in Fight Science, a show on Discovery which is awesome btw, and found that MMA fighters are capable of exerting several newtons more than their martial counterparts in several combatant moves. Also MMA fighters are trained to take hits just like how they are trained to give them. Truly a gritty sport.
I'm too intelligent to the unintended, and too dumb for the obvious.

This is the show in which the host picks up different techniques from different fighting styles, right ? Seen it a few times, quite good. Regarding the beating these guys take, its unreal. Earlier fights used to go on despite fighters taking a pounding but the UFC has put the fighters safety at the forefront and hence fights get stopped for cuts etc.

UFC 107 is on the weekend with the big fights being Kenny Florian - Clay Guida, Frank Mir - Cheick Congo and BJ Penn - Diego Sanchez.

I think the one you are talking about is Fight Quest where those two guys will travel and learn different style for one week.

Hey on which channel does UFC get showed?
