I have the 70-300[4.x zoom] and it is worth the price [25K I paid around 3 years back].
I am not sure about the 55-300[5.x zoom] though, keep in mind the 55-300 is a DX lens where as the 70-300 is a FX [Full Frame] lens. Do check for some reviews on the 55-300, but I somehow feel the 70-300 will be slightly better, better zoom always does not translate into better snaps at the long end.

What are the other lenses you have?

        Hi,
As you have D90, I guess you have the kit lens 18-105. Choosing among the two lenses you mention, I would go with 55-300 VR. They both are not very sharp wide open and between 200-300mm. You need to stop down at f/8 or11 to get sharp pictures. Here the VR will be advantages. The built quality of 70-300 is much better than 55-300.

          @bprags.. i have the Kit lens 18-105..
          no other lens ..
but i am planning to buy a 105 macro lens..
since a new 105mm lens would cost me around 50k, i was thinking of getting a second hand 105mm lens..
          what do you say..
is it worth buying a Second hand lens..

          • Pranit,
Of course, it is worth buying used lenses provided they are functional and there is no fungus in it.
Now my question to you is, how much are you into macro photography? A dedicated macro lens can be expensive (even used). It's definitely worth it if you will be shooting lots of macro. Other option will be to buy a 50mm, f/1.8 and a reversing mount. When you use the lens in reverse it works as macro lens. Another option is to use 50mm reversed in front of your kit lens. For this you will need a reversing ring. If you will shoot macro occasionally, I would recommend this route because you can then use the 50mm independently to shoot in low light and take advantage of it's large aperture.

If you are on a budget and have a D90(a blessing in disguise) and dont mind the lack of VR, you can consider Nikon 70-300mm f/4-5.6G (around 6,000/- brand new as per nikon india website!!)

+1 to what hensil has mentioned. Also why don't u look at the tamron 90mm macro lens, should be available for 17k, the iq is very good, also I would advice u to buy the 50mm 1.8d for 5k, nothing beats it for portraits.
as for long zoom, the 70-300mm vr is a good buy over the 55-300.

I very much agree. Tamron is the best value for money. I have used it and also Nikon, the image quality of both is similar.
The Nikor 70-300 VR is the best among the variable aperture in that focal range. Alas! it is very expensive.
I recommend you get 50mm. Even an old manual lens will do. You will have a different avenue opened up for you in photography.

and then as you guys have mentioned about a 50mm lens, i have heard about it from a few friends of mine, but then how is it different form a 50mm zoom by a 18-105mm lens...

                      Whats the f number at 50mm on your 18-105??? 4?? 4.5???
The lens in question, the 50mm lens its f1.8 PERIOD

                      EDIT:
Well its unfair if I leave it there!! The 50mm f1.8 is a prime lens.
The term prime has come to be used as the opposite of zoom; that is, a prime lens is a fixed-focal-length, or unifocal lens, while a zoom lens has a variable focal length.
A prime lens of a given focal length is less versatile than a zoom whose range includes that focal length, but is often of superior optical quality, lighter weight, smaller bulk and lower cost. In comparison with a zoom lens, a prime lens has fewer moving parts and optimization for one particular focal length. With a less complicated lens formula they suffer from fewer problems related to chromatic aberration.
Because their optics are simpler, prime lenses usually have a larger maximum aperture (smaller f-number) than zoom lenses. This allows photography in lower light and a shallower depth of field.

In addition to what kkrk2 has mentioned, you should check out some portraits taken with the 50mm, You will be blown away by the BOKEH and contrast, you will get the film like affect that you can never get with an all rounder lens like the one you have. To put it in a sentence "There is absolutely no comparison at 50mm between the two", I use it almost 90% of the times for portraits, I have almost stopped using my 18-70 lens after I got the 50mm.

PS:- Just do a google image search using "nikkor 50mm f 1.8"

I heard the folks who are into macro, use the Manual focusing option more often than auto focus. If thats the case with you, yes you can look at some incredible lens via this route!!! Should I tempt you with f1.4 or f1.2???

                            • Hey friends,

I am looking for a replacement of my DSC H50 cam as that camera is no more with me, dont ask details.

the dsc h50 from sony cybershot had automatic iso depending on the mode you choose, 15 x optical zoom with different modes for the lens.

It was a point and shoot camera and i am not that well experienced with dslr.

Can you suggest something better within a budget of 25k?

If you are ok with 7x optical zoom, have a look at Nikon Coolpix P7000.

But if you are big jooom lover, you may try
                                Nikon Coolpix P100 (26x)
                                Panasonic FZ35/FZ38 (18x)
                                Canon SX30 IS (35x)

PS: Of all the above, the P7000 has the biggest sensor!!!
