I have been using a S3 IS from Canon, in combination with the 400D. So, perhaps, you can have a look at the S3 IS or the latest offering from Canon - the S5 IS.. It's a real good cam, the S3. So, going by the performance of the former, I am pretty sure the latter (S5) performs brilliantly as well..

I have this lens, got it from Singapore a one and half year ago, paid 25K for it. Should be available here for around 22K to 23K. It has VRII.

canon has decently launched a cmos powershot sxis or something.not available in US though.

a fuji 5700(which will be at rock bottom price)or a 8000fd will do. sony cams in semi slrs are not on the top models..see if you can get a second hand sony R-1.its a brilliant camera.
              there are no stupid questions.

Hmm...semi-SLR. Something similar in the lines what I wanted to ask...I have narrowed down my choices to the following:
                    1. Canon S3/S5 IS
                    2. Canon SX 100/110 IS
                    3. Canon A720 IS
                    4. Sony DSC H-10

                    Now, my basic requirements are:
                    1. Manual focus - H10 doesn't qualify here
                    2. Price < 15-16k, in India or US
                    3. Zoom not primary requirement; can do with 6x optcal
                    4. Best picture quality in the class

So the pros among us, please advice on the best choice that I have right now

Have you thought about the Canon G7/G9? One of the best (if not THE best) digital camera in the market. But then I am not so sure whether it would fit in your budget.

As far as choosing from the list you have provided, I have personally used (and still use) the S3 and it is a very good camera which can do whatever you want it to, and then some! Manual focus, 12x solid optical zoom lens, good picture quality, macro (and super macro..) mode and the likes; everything is present..

As far as other cameras are concerned, probably the users of the respective cameras can pitch in...
                      :)

@aryan u snatched my words, I was about to say this...

Better Photography has given a very nice coverage about this cam. and seeing the specs it seems to be a VFM , well its near the price of a entry level SLR @ 25-30k...

@anvancy- I am in a plan to go for this only.. waiting for the prices to be slashed.. if not till dec then I'll be using D40 only for the trip I mentioned .

i personally would strongly suggest to go for the fuji colors..the canon G7 or 9 is much of a DSLR backup..the F series of fuji will work brilliantly in that landscape where you will go..my personal take..and its much cheaper than the G.

The first one is an L series lens from Canon and it has a constant aperture of f4 right from 70mm all the way upto the 200mm mark.

The second lens, well, there is NOTHING in it to compare it to the earlier lens, really..
