  • Engine Oil change for Honda Activa

    Precautions
    - Ensure that the engine is either warm or cold so that the exhaust will not burn the skin
    - Use working gloves to prevent skin from oil
    - Take necessary precautions when tightening & removing the drain bolt/plug & oil filler/dipstick. Uneven or improper threading leads to very expensive damages.
    - Dispose the old engine oil safely or return back the oil to scrap dealer or oil dealer

    Tools
    - 16mm socket & drive or spanner or adjustable wrench
    - Plastic tray to dispense existing engine oil
    - Measuring jar to measure new engine oil
    - Small funnel
    - Mechanic Plier, helps if the oil filler cap/dipstick is tight & cannot be opened with bare hands

    Procedure
    Step 1
    - Position the scooter in main stand/upright position & remove the engine oil drain bolt using a 16mm wrench/spanner
    - Let the oil drain completely & collect it in a tray to dispose off properly; tilt the scooter towards right to drain off the oil completely

    Step 2
    - Once the oil is drained completely, close the engine drain using the drain bolt & tighten it. Ensure that it is tigtened adequate so that the oil does not leak when filled.
    - Open the Oil filler/dipstick with hands or using pliers. Care should be taken not to break the top of the dipstick if using pliers.
    - Using a measuring jar, measure about 800 ml of good quality 4 stroke engine oil of 20W-40 grade & fill the engine oil in the crankcase using the funnel.
Tip - During this process, it is convenient to park the scooter on side stand/slanting position rather than main stand/upright position.

    Step 3
    - Once the engine oil is filled, close the oil filler/dipstick & tighten adequately.
    - Start the engine & idle for 2-3 minutes
    - Stop the engine & ensure that the oil level is at upper level mark/max level

    Notes
    1. If the oil level is not at max level, wipe the oil filler/dipstick with a cloth, top up the engine oil to the upper level mark. Do not overfill.
    2. Now reinsert the wiped oil filler/dipstick without screwing it in
    3. Remove the oil filler/dipstick
    4. The oil level should be between the upper & lower marks/max level & min level on the dipstick
Important - During this process, ensure that the scooter is in upright position or on main stand.

Excellently written guide. This should be useful as I need to change the oil next week in my sis-in-law's scoot.

                  Excellent DIY

                  Thanks Aargee
A very useful DIY for Oil change. We really dont know what the service guys do, how much oil they put in and if they "really" change it.

I heard that there is a oil strainer screen near the drain bolt but I could'nt see one above. Can anyone tell (with pics if possible) where is this strainer screen exactly located?

Try Mobil 1 Supersynth 5W50 fully synthetic type IV Basestock oil. MRP Rs 1100 and street price is about Rs 700 per litre. Suitable only for Dry clutch vehicles like Activa and cars, so do not use in Motorcycles. Amazing smoothness of engine, boost in power (due to reduced friction) lesser cold starting roughness and engine scratcing noise and a maximum of 8% increase in mileage (roughly 4 kms more to a litre of petrol). Change interval is increased to 6000-8000 kms instead of 2000-3000 km for mineral oils. (Standard oils)

i know its been over an yr since this was posted ... the oil strainer screen is NOT located near the drain bolt. It is on the other side i.e. near the side stand. A clear description is given in the owners manual. A couple of years ago when i asked for the oil strainer screen at the ASC parts section.. they were like there is no such thing.Tried explaining it to them but... . I have never replaced the oil strainer screen on my dio [jan'07 run 35k kms], just clean it and change oil every 2000km(if its honda oil) or 2500-3000km if its shell ax5 [both 20w40]. I top up around 50-100ml after 1500km.
                        This is wrt the older activa's & dio's (i.e. the 102cc ones)

For the new activa's and dio's i think the recommended oil is 10w30 and the honda website shows only that grade listed. Earlier i used to get the 20w40 white bottle from ASC.. not sure now since i have switched over to Shell Ax5 over an year ago and loving it!!

                            1. The oil strainer screen looks like a thimble made out of steel mesh (fits on ones thumb)
                            2. Mine is a '07 Dio 102cc one like the older activa (and i am not sure if the '05 activa has such a oil strainer screen) they share the same engine though.
                            3. Do you have your activa's owners manual ? check it out... I have seen the description and cleaning/replacing instruction for the strainer in my Dio's manual and have got it cleaned at every oil change. This is located just around the side/main stand ,LHS of crankcase (i think thats around were the engine no is present) - you have remove the nut and out pops the spring/washer/strainer and some more engine oil.. I dont have manual right now or my dio at the moment so i will post the pic in a cpl of days..

My previous post wasnt yet approved at the time of writing this... here are the pics of the oil strainer (from the user manual) for my Dio (Jan '07 model). Also including the recommended oil chart from the manual. (i have been using 20w40 until now, with the initial about 20k km on the honda 20w40 and then the shell ax5 20w40.. the next oil change will be the shell ax7 10w40) - the shell ax5 has shown a very noticeable improvement in engine smoothness with extended drain interval of atleast 500km over the honda oil.
