  • K&n Roar from stock filter

bored with your stock exhaust note and want to switch to k&n but worried that it may damage your engine, well by this DIY we can get K&n exhaust note(similar to p150 not p220) and also will notice a increase in acceleration

things required a bike and its key
1st open the side cowl(for pulsar) and remove the seat then you will notice this air filter box and the rubber cap on the top as seen below

    (this rubber cap is removable)
    remove this cap
below is the pic after removing the cap

this is the cap after removing

now place the seat back, start the bike and check out the roar after 4k rpm, better take a short ride..btw if you are not satisfied or want to get the stock note back stick the rubber back onto the filter box.
AFAIK this wont harm the engine because this hole is behind the filter hence filter wont allow any dirt into the engine however this may require slight tweaking(because of slight increase in air flow will turn the mixture towards leaner side) to carb setting to get the max result
P.S i hav'nt done any tweaking to carb because im getting a better acceleration after removing this, also started experiencing slight poping of front end while hard acceleration(this popping was absent in my bike after 700km)
this idea was given by my friend xBhp.com : The Global Indian Biking Community - View Profile: Shubham2003

    UPdate
REmoved the sensor in the filter box and now its sound about 90% like a K&N fitted bike..and the best part is it sounds like stock bike till 4k rpm after that it roars like anything.. below is the picture of the removed sensor,to remove that you need to remove the rear mudguard's front half part and remove that two screws on the filter box were a wire goes in,and finally disconnect the sensor and tape that plug to avoid any contact with water...
P.S after removing this you wont see the air filter chocked icon on the console even if the filter is dirty so a frequent(1.5k~2k) cleaning is required

Buddy the thing which you removed it's called Snorkel , Yes you can remove it and you will feel the difference but the problem is water may get inside and spoil your filter [During service or during monsoon]

this thing personally checked in p-180 and in my official bike platina and posted about it in p180 owners thread...
any way i was not that impressed with sound produced in p180 which was very minimal and switched back to the normal set up just after a test drive.
but, it was doing wonders with platina.
the sound was almost same as kn.some friends are even mistaken that, there was a kn under my seat
sound was freeking awesome, and you cant control your right wrist, but, the mileage was really dropped badly...and after some days felt some engine ruffness and felt like some thing is wrong happening, then switched back to stock...
anway i dont think its not that good atleast for engine from my personal experience...
        sigpicmy bike is my sign

Bump Bump Bump.... Bike is lean hence the better acceleration. If the bike's not heating up continue riding, if it is then tweak the AFR abit and you'll be fine.

some article say leaner mixture provide more FE while heating the engine parts and decrease in performance while slightly richer mixture provide better performance with decrease in FE with cooler engine.
but some article say lean provides more performance and FE with hotter engine and reduce its life span and slightly richer(optimal) provide coller engine with mixture of performance and FE
tell me which one to trust

Hey bro, even i have removed the cap after seeing this thread of yours. Now my bike is roaring like a beast once it crosses 4k rpm. I hope this does not affect in economy or performance of my bike.

                it sounds great

did the very same experiment in HH Karizma and HH Hunk and rode bike for 7000 kms.

experiment was done with NEW air filter and i dint changed my fuel station and engine oil brand/quality too.

let me pen down my experience with it.

                1. somewhat sporty sound of intake.
                2. increment in acceleration.
                3. no change in top end.
                4. 10-15% deduction in mileage as we have to increase fuel flow too to match incoming amount of air.

above all seems good, but the drawback which i came across are.

more dirt in carb requiring more frequent clean up, this means, air filter is allowing small dirt particles.
after few thousand kms, colored smoke started coming from exhaust indicating piston rings are worn out due to dirt in petrol hope reboring is not requied. Finger crossed

hope my experince will help you all.

free of cost free flow intake modification

thank u for the idea bro
                  I done on my pulsar150 ug2 (2005)
now when i twisting throttle much my pulsar roars like free flow exhaust system & when city ride my pulsar gives more pickup than stock !

removing this doesnt allow any dust because the rubber cap doesnt have any thing to filter the air so its one and the same, but only difference is removing this will allow bit more air so carb has to be tweeked, and the slight decrease in mileage is due to the constant ripping we do in order to hear that roar

can we put a piece of filter material there and tweak the AFR?

Yes, that is good idea. When doing this try to stick a thin filter medium, otherwise the whole idea will be a waste. in this way some amount of water spray can be prevented into the air box.
Do test it and give a feedback!

im no pro but afaik placing addition filter material(spong) on the opening will lead to decrease in air flow and may lead to some trouble's like low acceleration or power and also the exhaust note may be even smoother compared to stock..better wait for others reply or try trail and error method for abt 10kms then you will get the clear picture.

i ve read in some thread in xbhp itself that removal of the snorkel only changes the note of suction sound....no gain in power.....the change in sound note makes us believe gain in acceleration....

carb needs frequent cleaning after removing snorkel in carb bikes so what about the FI bikes? doing this affect any part in bikes like ZMR..R15 etc??
