  • Gear Oil Change; Hero Pleasure, Honda Activa, Honda Dio

Like the Engine oil gear oil is one of the Important thing need to be changed in constant interval the manual says 5000Km but its better to change it with every engine oil change. which would help your machine's transmission work smoother and longer(gear oil is pretty cheap when comparing to other consumables in scooters)

    Things We Need:
    1. A draining Pan
    2. 12mm Socket or Ring spanner
    3. Oil can(a must needed thing)
    4. SAE90 grade Gear oil (just need 120ml of it; pour it to oil can).

    Review Of Castrol GL-40 oil:
To Be frank i am not impressed. Comparing to older oil which was in the transmission box its makes the full system more silent but it lack pick up after 65KmpH. Its pretty smother upto 50Kmph( i dont know RPM so am referring with KmpH as reference).

Step 1: Warm up the engine and Put scooter in center stand.

The Bolt in Red circle is the "DRAIN BOLT" and green one is "REFILL BOLT".

Step 2: Loosen the Refill bolt with 12mm Socket' ring spanner.

Note: Keep the Pan below it.

Step 3: then remove the Drain Bolt.

3>> let the oil drain out.

Step 4: Rotate the tire slowly. which will help us to remove the oil completely.

Step 5: Tighten the Drain Bolt.

    Note: dont over tight it.

Step 5: Pump the gear Oil into transmission unit using the oil gun.

5>>insert the nozzle fully into it.

Step 6: After pumping the oil in. Let the excess oil flow out.

Note: Dont Over fill the transmission. If so the gasket will get leak.

Step 7: Put the Refill Bolt back. look for any leaks. If there is no leak your ready to role. Enjoy!

Thanks for the Very detailed post buddy. Did not know the Grade is SAE90 for Activa as well. I would remind my father to take the gear oil along the next time he is going to get his Activa serviced. I recently picked up 1L of EP 90 Gear oil from a Company owned and COmpany Operated Indian oil petrol bunk. I got it for an unbelievable 170 rs per liter ( The mrp was 210).

@zakir- Everything is correct but you made a big mistake which you indicated but do not know the solution.

You have said that you are not happy of castrol GL4 as it is killing torque. But it is not the mistake of oil but yours.
By gear oil you got carried away by the name. By gear oil means not actually gear oil but oil in the rear transmission. The recommended grade is 10W 30 that hero recommends or at the maximum you can use 20W 40. You have used SAE 90 grade oil which is like grease for this transmission. Imagine if 10W 30 is thin like petrol then 90 grade is thick like castor oil.

I also have a pleasure and i also made the same mistake, first time. But immediately drained and refilled it with recommended grade. So drain the oil and fill 20W 40 or 10W 30 as it is recommended grade. What i do is while changing engine oil pleasure uses 750 ml and we get 900 ml cans. So rest 150 ml i use for filling transmission by 120 ml. So when you change the engine oil use the same oil for changing oil of gear. Drain the gear oil as it is too thick for this transmission or else it will rupture the wheel bearing oil seal due to excess pressure created in the transmission chamber.

Second thing always while tightening the bolts use open end spanner than ratchet wrench. Its because if you are using ratchet wrench, you cannot know how much torque you applied and will strip the aluminum threads of the casing. Instead use open end spanner and tighten with full might.

Bro, By my experience servo(which i was previously using) is better than Castrol which i had used. Bro its an easy job to change the gear oil. Its better you do it yourself. Dont trust SVC guys( from my personal experience am saying)

Bro But i asked the Hero SVC guys before doing this. They told me to buy Castrol SAE90 gear oil.

Ya Bro thanks for your Info. I had contacted the Hero directly for knowing the real oil grade to be used in the transmission unit. They told me that 10W30 is the recommended. Thanks you again for pointing out my mistake.

hero recommends 10w30 engine oil for the gear box/transmission ??!! I always thought all the 'auto' scoots used a gear oil like the ep90 gear oil. This is what is recommended by at least honda and ive been using it since day 1 with no issues whatsoever!
these activa's dio's pleasures swish etc .. all are basically the same and the 'gear box' oil i thought was always a 90 gear oil.

i did some research and came to know that the regular multigrade engine oils (e.g. 10w30, 10w40, 20w40 etc..) are graded differently from the 'Gear oils'.
A ep90 gear oil has almost similar viscosity as a 10w40/50 engine oil but with better protection when it comes to gearing mechanisms due to the EP(extreme pressure) additives.

so i think using a 10w40 oil may not do any harm on these small scoots. but ive always used the sae 90 gear oil in my dio and honda recommends this on all its scoots. and i don't think the 90 gear oil would make the scooter sluggish (because i never felt any loss of performance). well, at least don't expect great throttle response after 65kmph on these scoots

Sid'Jee , correctly said - SAE engine oil grade and gear oil grading system is different . But 90wt gear oil is approximately equal in viscosity to a 40wt (like a straight SAE40) engine oil . Not the 10wxx or 20wxx multigrades .

No need to use single grade transmission oils for our scooters anymore. There are multi grade transmission oils like 75w90 or 80w90 available easily, even Indian manufacturers like HP, BP and IOC are manufacturing it and so does Motul and Shell and they are not expensive at all except Motul which is a semi synthetic multi grade gear oil. I too noticed, but why multigrade for gear oil - In 75W90, 75W is flow in cold/winter and 90 the viscosity at gearbox operating temperature? Scooter gearboxes won't run as hot as an engine (100-120C). Castrol was giving 120 ml multigrade gear oil free in a toothpaste-like-pack with Castrol Activ 4-AT. Wonder if the offer is still on.
