  • How to fix/repair your Automobile Horn

Sometimes your bike horn may encounter several problems, a horn that blows at a lower tone than is normal or a horn that blows dull or does not blow at all. Fixing a broken horn can often be a do-it-yourself project.

Some horns are factory sealed, means there are no screw system to open it. Fixing those types of horns are often difficult because once you open (some how by cutting) you would need a drilling machine to put new holes to screwed it up. Thats only if it has additional space on its circumference.

But those horns that have screw/nut from the factory can easily be opened to fix it. Here is how to do!

First open all the nuts/screws to open.

The point which your are seeing is need to be clean because those points works as a switch for centered coil. When the coil receives power it pulls the drum, and when it pulls the drum touches the lower plate. Which then cuts the power to the coil. Then the drum goes up. When it went up the points again gets in touch. So thats happens very fast and the noise is produced. So due to the continuous operation sometimes those points gets carbon build up. Which then requires tuning and when tuning doesn't work, then it comes the time to clean those points.

Here the plastic washer below the spring prevent the screw to get in touch with the body. If it get touched nothing wrong will happen. Its just only prevent the connector on the opposite of it to get grounded with body. If washer have got damaged or broken, that point may touch the body, but nothing wrong will happen, you would just need to make sure you don't connect the battery positive (+) to that connector, if connected your fuse will blow. Just connect to the other point and you will be fine. But this rarely happen. Just don't take out that washer. Leave it on its own place.

Now fit everything back. Power it & re-tune it and it will definitely work.

    Warning!
Make sure you don't touch the center screw. Its become magnet when powered which pulls the drum. It is for adjusting the gap between the drum and magnet. Less gap will prevent the drum to touch the lower plate, more gap will again reduce the pulling power, hence which will result in abnormal noise. So don't mess up with it. Unless you have completely dead horn.

Completely dead horn can also be fix if its magnet is working. The sound which horn produce is obtain from the combination of center and tuning screw. Which cannot be thought. For that you would need to understand the function of the horn. You will also need multimeter. Experienced users can do this.

    Tips!
If your horn is still not working.
    Check for any loose connection.
Your horn switch may have got carbon built-up.
If using relay. Then relay internal connectors may have got carbon built-up.

If you have older battery, check if there is any corrosion on their connectors. Clean it and apply grease.
Check for the distill water level. Older battery also consume more distill water than newer batteries.

It does not require to fill water for 1.5 years in new battery. Later, 1 time in 6 month. So if you are filling distill water 1 to 2 times every month. Your battery is getting down every night. Corrosion is building-up on their connectors. Then thats surely indicating that your battery needs replacement.
