Hello Xbhpians,
I’m looking for some clarity and expert guidance regarding the primary chaincase oil on my 1995 Royal Enfield Bullet 350 Cast-Iron (contact-breaker points) model.
Here’s what I’ve observed and would like help with:
- Oil-level screw:
There is only one small flat-head screw on the clutch/primary case, positioned at the very bottom.
When removed, almost all the oil drains out. Some say it’s only a level plug, not a drain plug — but since it sits so low, I’m unsure of its exact function. - Oil quantity:
Different sources mention 350 ml, while others (and some manuals) quote 430 – 450 ml.
I’d like to confirm the correct capacity for the 1995 Cast-Iron Bullet. - Oil grade:
What’s the best oil to use today? I’ve heard of people using SAE 20W-50 engine oil, straight SAE 30, or even ATF Type F for smoother clutch operation.
What do you all recommend for this vintage engine? - Draining and refilling method:
Since there’s no proper drain bolt, most mechanics remove the clutch case, inspect and adjust the primary chain, and then refill with fresh oil using a new gasket.
Is there any cleaner or easier method that experienced Bullet owners follow?
Any diagrams, photos, or tips from long-time Cast-Iron Bullet riders would be greatly appreciated. I want to ensure the correct oil level and avoid over- or under-filling.
Thanks in advance for your help!
