  • Bike Wont go off in the rains.

Dear all .. Hi this is my 1st post on this forum . I brought my ThunderBird TS in Oct 2010 in Mumbai. And the next till now whenever I used to ride in the rains I had a immense problem of the bike cutting off and difficulty to start even in light drizzle and when the roads were wet the water used to smehow get to the spark plug and used to stop I always had the fear of the bike shutting off and taking at least 10-15 mints for it to start and god forbid if I was riding in torrential rains I wud b stranded under sme shelter with my bike in no condition to start . I used to try all tricks remove spark plug cap dry with a cloth and try to puff sme air into it in the hope of it starting, it was all a matter of luck if it wud start thn again chug a little till it wud stop again. Aftr struggling for that many times and that long I feel really stupid to know that it could have been rectified with a piece of electric tape or with industrial grade rubber sealant which I have shown in the pic . I hope I have made my little contribution to the novice riders who face similar problems . now I can ride through the storm and rain without any problems . A little too late for the rainy season caution post, but will be handy even when u give your Royal Enfield for a pressure wash it does take time to start also the wire coming from the coil ( correct me on this) to the spark plug gets some sort of white powdery deposit due to getting wet all the time which will eventually corrode the wire or will prevent proper supply of electricity .Click image for larger version

Good to know that you got it fixed. But shouldn't this be something that you should be asking the service center to fix? A bike not starting in rains due to electrical problems is either a major problem or a major design flaw.

Hi .. Im quite sure i would have checked with the service center but that is a long story altogether i will post a topic about my experience about the so call " AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER" Royal Enfield has sadly picked some real crap mech's some of who have just their own garage and thn have been made the authorized service center without any quality checks and without any responsibility whatsoever, i would agree about the design flaw, with my experience but not that in-depth tech knowledge coz it somehow used to give out sparks from the spark plug head when wet, where I have put the sealant it worked for me beautifully.
