The music of the engine had a different tune. The culprit was the tappet. So though of retuning the music of the engine to once again be in bliss.
The tappet adjustment in FZ is similar to most of the bikes. I went through some of the DIY done by our BHPians and powered with the service manual of the FZ. I went ahead with the DIY for Tappet adjustment in my FZ.
Important Note:
The tappet adjustment must be done only when the engine is in cold condition. Ideal time to start the DIY is in the morning because the engine will be in cold condition.
The tools required:
- Feeler gauge (0.08 to 0.16mm leaves)
- 10 mm ring spanner/10 mm socket with torque wrench
- Screw driver (star and flat)
- 1 foot steel ruler (Neat tool realised only later)
- Nose plyer
- 4 & 5mm allen key.
- 17 mm socket with extension.
Procedure:
- First remove the seat, side panel using 4 mm allen key and star screw driver.
- Remove the side tank cover(Plastic) using 4 mm allen key. Remove the water drain tube and remove the central tank cover also.
- Now remove the fuel line and fuel gauge connection.

- Remove the tank using a 10 mm ring spanner/10mm socket.

- After removing the tank. Remove the spark plug cap and hoses for the air induction system.
- Carefully remove the allen screw from the engine top cover using a 5 mm allen key.
- Open the Access screw and screw access time stamp using a 1 foot steel rule. Actually this idea came only after I have finished the whole exercise. Initial I used a nose plyer and a wire cutter to open the idea of using the I foot scale came only later.
- Now your piston is in the TDC. Now we can do the inspection and adjustment of the tappet. For inlet the gap is 0.08 to 0.12mm and for exhaust the gap is 0.12 to 0.16mm.
- If the tappet gap is less or more, loosen the lock nut using a 10 mm ring spanner and adjust the tappet using a nose plyer. After adjusting the correct gap. Hold the tappet screw with the nose plyer and then tighten the lock nut. This is the tricky part. Because the tappet will slightly get tighten in the process. So after some trials and error. Found the best way is to slightly increase the gap by 0.02mm and then tighten the lock nut and the end result in the correct gap of the tappet. After tightening the lock nut to the required torque (13Nm). Check the final gap of the tappet. It must lie within the specification. I set it at the mean (i.e) 0.10mm for inlet and 0.14mm for the exhaust. By setting the gap in the mean there is an allowance for the tappet to either get loose or tightening by normal usage. Thereby reducing the frequency of tappet adjustment.
- Now the re-assemble all the parts as we have removed them. Please take care that you do not over tighten (8Nm) the allen bolts in the engine top cover. Since it can shear off from the engine block.
- The best part of this entire exercise is that you can even check whether there is any replacement required for the tubes in air induction, O-rings, etc as we do not check them often.
Start the engine and do not give more throttle. Check the idling and the sound of the engine. If you hear the beautiful music of your engine then voila your DIY was a grand success.
