Personally, i wouldn't risk a helmet on a strap like that.Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

This type of strap can easily handle the weight of helmet.It is quite similar to helmet strap.
No scratch to helmet.No scratch to bike.

I am a bit confused here but are we talking of carrying the extra helmet while riding here or just while it is parked?

nice idea, what I was doing - strap on the helmet to one of the "holes" on the clip-ons, used one of the trellis frame "rods" to attach on, but this looks like a nice mod to have..
