if my memory serves me right
some years back o-ring chain (costly as compared to normal chain) was introduced with claim that it contained lubrication so almost no need of external lubing and it produces less noise.
then came the philosophy or formula that it needs lubrication every 500 km(less km than the cheaper normal chain) ,when asked about the first statement ,the reply was it need lubrication as rust protector or need lubrication or side plates
interestingly the bikes with more chain related noise are with o or x-ring chain

However,Vivek bhai ,engine oil will not stick to chain as gear oil can ,especially in case of high speed run.
i do not use any kind of chain cleaner and chain lube ,in my opinion these product are just waste of money so diesel for cleaning and gear oil for lubing.however 1 lit of gear oil cost around 150 so why to use expensive and less effective engine oil.

This is what I wanted to convey via my video that we are tricked with all these gimmicks, I agree that gear oil is better than plain engine oil but either of them can be used and it's not a big deal. No major care is needed at the first place. Best bet is to change the chain set instead of wasting money on these expensive chain cleaners and lubes.

For non-o-ring chain a heavier oil ( like 90 gear oil ) is called for it's lubrication . But for an o-ring chain any light oil like engine-oil or even lighter oil is sufficient , and even desirable because a sticky oil will eventually collect a load of dirt & road-grit which will wear the chain and o-rings = is counter-productive . O-ring chains do not need lubrication in it's most loaded bearing parts ( i.e inside the pins and rollers ) - it already has grease inside there which is sealed in by the rings . The purpose of lubing such chain is to prevent surface rust and keep the rubber o-rings supple and free - thats it . For this heavy gear oil is totally not needed .
For cleaning both types kerosene is recommended , covered chains rarely needs any cleaning even , oiling once in a while is just fine .
