However, we were not always at the forefront of electric car technology. Our team was started by a small group of enthusiastic engineers in the year 2012, in a tiny lab in the Mechanical Engineering Department at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, with no idea of what they had to do to succeed, but with the will to do whatever it took. We started with internal combustion engines, and made the switch to electric powertrains in 2012, after the BAJA competition.
Our first car, Vayu bagged the first-ever Indian Perseverance award at FS Michigan, and we also won the best new-entrant award, competing with 25 other debutants. We then moved on to Agni, and then to the Prithvi series, which won the Raftaar award at BAJA, for being the lightest and the fastest car in the competition.
It was after this that we moved on to electric vehicles. The seismic shift to electric powertrains was a substantial milestone in our progress. The series was christened the Evo series, and it was India's first electric Formula Student Vehicle. We built the first Evo in just six months, pushing it out in the nick of time for the competition. With Evo 2.0, we became the first Indian team to clear all the scrutineering criteria, to finally take part in the dynamic events and became the first Indian team to complete both in our third try, including the gruelling endurance test.
In subsequent cars, we developed an Aluminium Honeycomb Monocoque chassis, carbon fibre A-arms, a hybrid planetary gearbox and enabled our cars to take advantage of regenerative braking. Today, we are one of the most revered teams in India, with a considerable amount of technical expertise, but with the same never-say-never attitude that we started with. Today, we have the capability to manufacture carbon fibre parts entirely in house. We have designed and built 11 cars till now, with production being underway on our 12th competition challenger.
Amongst our most notable recent developments, with help from our sponsors, the team conceptualised, and 3D printed titanium wheel uprights. We designed our battery management system ourselves, and our in-house aero package happens to be an innovation to reckon with.
Just last year, we secured 4th place amongst EVs in the FSUK Competition, beating out vehicles made by some of the most renowned colleges around the globe. The AutoCross event brought a better result for us, with us placing 3rd, amongst EVs and Internal Combustion vehicles combined.
We have secured support from multiple entities in our quest for perfection. The most notable would be IIT Bombay, which has stopped at nothing to give the team what it needs. However, equally significant, are our sponsors, like NRB Bearings, MAHLE and Wipro 3D, to name a few. Without their help, our dream would be just that, a dream.
With the determination of our teammates and the assistance provided by our sponsors, current and future, we hope to reach new frontiers in electric vehicle design and create unmatched engineers in the process.
