Just a quick question regarding counter-steering

Is counter-steering a momentary process or we do it till we complete the turn?

From what I understand, counter-steering helps the bike to change direction quickly and at lower speeds (40-50kph) it is simply a momentary action and as the change of direction happens you point the handle bar to where you want to go (since the speed has come down to about 30-35kph and now normal steering can take over)

But in longer high speed turns (read 100+) you need to counter steer till the bike completes the turn since the bike cannot be steered normally (due to the high speed).

Am I right with my understanding?

Probably not. I've been trying to notice the countersteering while riding, for past couple weeks. I can say that counter steering works even at speeds as low as 10-15. It is only in 1st gear that the bike steers in the direction of the handle bar.

If you want to understand it practically, try a small stunt on an empty road above 40Kmph.

Leave one of the hands from the handle bar (say left hand), try to hold the accelerater with the left hand and leave the right hand. Try moving your vehicle to left or right, you will then realize -
- if you try to navigate to right, bike would go to left and vice versa

try this out ( at your own risk though )

Whoa... No need to leave handle bars for that....

Just ensure no vehicles are nearby and you are wearing decent gear... then at apeeds of about 40, very slightly push the left/right handle bar grip away from you (without trying to pull it from the opposite side)... And you will see the bike counter-steering in the direction of your push...

The slight movement is enough to prove it to yourself that it works... and you will notice that it is easier (and faster) than making yourself lean in that direction in order to turn, thats why its very useful in emergencies...

i was once being saved by this counter steering technique,i was on the UP highway at around 8pm,riding my pulsar 220 at more than 120 kmph,i was crouched and watching my speedometer then suddenly a milkman on bike with 2 tankers on both of its bike's side hanging landed in front of me from nowhere and i was less than 40 meters away from himat that time my heart came in my mouth ,then i just counter steered away from him with a gap of just few inches .thank god

you just need to practice it and i know its a very good technique at high speeds
