I was accompanied by a cop (who insisted to sit behind) to police station. He was telling about chain snatching incidents there. I was like lol.... Then he asked why was i laughing so much.. Then I said I wouldn't have bought a Rs3.2Lakh bike to snatch a Rs20000 chain and risked my life and bike for a chain. Then he sensibly agreed and narrated his version too. He said he can't do anything as control room radioed that some guys were popping wheelies and their work was check that complaint.

P.S On way he asking the top speed, mileage, etc of the bike. Later he asked me to go faster on a straight stretch of road to see the performance of the bike and check its top speed. I was surprised when this came out of the cop. Later thought by putting myself in his shoes, I would do the same thing.. But he was nice guy and understood us...

Guys grow a handle bar mustache ,and a firm look, and invariably you will not be stopped.Even if it happens on seeing the mustache they will be very reluctant to ask for details.....my personal experience

alternatively carry a spare key with you so that if the mamu takes the key, put in thespare one and ride off.

you can also short the wires of the switch to bypass it.. though i have never done thatand its just a theory

fellow biking bro's why dont we put the actual lock hidden some were and keep the original(standard) lock as a dummy one even the cop snatch the keys you can still ride away or a theif try putting duplicate lock no use (since the actual lock will be some were else)

Why do it when you know the law?
Per law, the cops are not supposed to pull the keys out; if they do it, when you haven't commited a crime, call 100 immediately. Atleast here in Chennai.

correct, only a cop the level of sergeant can actually question and issue a ticket, and at no time can they pluck the key from your vehicle. But the question of who is right, the cop or us is a question, and no one in the force or judiciary will ever listen to you.You must stop a traffic ticket before it is written. If you have helpful relatives or friend in the force at a higher level, then drop names and walk away.Like in any incident PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE.
One more thing I had observed is that cops are sensitive to bikers with shiny bikes ,esp., if they are riding in groups. Many Chain snatching incidents ,and stolen bikes ,have been traced to such an example.

Well let me start by saying it was a Sunday. Lovely weather, good day to go for a bike ride. I'm home following the lazy Sunday routine of fooling around the house in the morning and i get a call from a friend (ZeNashB - R15) asking if i wanted to come along and as always, it was a yes. We were being joined by another friend (Gorbi - Ninja 250). And in a while we met up near his (Gorbi) place and off we were with a smile. But little did we realize our fate later on that day .

We took the bikes to this road which was incomplete due to some political issues and hence didn't lead to any big destination on the other end after a 2 Km stretch. We reached the point where it ended and pulled over for a little discussion about bikes and pics and were off minding our own business. On the way back he(Gorbi) Said there's a SBK parked in a house on a road close by and we took that route and saw the bike. Interestingly, the SBK owner was a good friend of mine and i asked my friends to pullover at his place . In i go and call him out and he's all smiles to see these bikes parked outside his place. Then, all the formalities of introducing each other done and he agrees to join us for a ride. In he goes, out he comes with the his gear and his SBK, an 06 gixxer. Off we are to the same spot, taking pics, and chatting about bikes, the good and the bad about bikes, etc. Then off we are to get a drink on the sunny evening (at around 4). And off we are on our bikes and we saw these cops on their TVS Apache, ponting at us for a second, and we had no clue why. So we continued and a few 100m out of the stretch, Mr. xyz (gixxer owner) gets a call saying one of his friends will be joining us. And we're there on the side of the road waiting for his friend and we see a police jeep pass us and stop a little ahead of us. They stop and a moment later the jeeps in reverse and they stop in front of us and a cop gets down, runs towards our bikes and grabs all the bikes keys! Stunned we are, absolutely clueless as to what the cops doing! Next moment he pulls his Walkie Talkie out and radios the cops on the Apache saying "Sir, we have them here, we have caught them while they were trying to run."
Next moment, we ask him what happened and he turns to us and says "Doing Wheeling eh?" Shocked we are to hear it !
Then began the argument with the cops. We're asking them who filed the complaint, but they refuse to tell us who (they were probably thinking of making a quick and big buck after seeing these fancy bikes). We even showed them the pics of our bikes parked together in the pics as evidence that we didn't do "Wheeling" but they refused to believe us and we are taken to the station. There, as soon as we took the bikes in, the S.I. walks out saying "Are these the bikes? Then file a case on them for rash "driving" and stunting on public roads." That's when Mr. xyz got really angry and pulled his phone out and called some freind of his who was an MLA and went into the station for their "discussion." A few minutes later they're out and we get our bikes back. While leaving the station to take our parked bikes, the S.I., loudly, "Ok, don't to wheeling next time, pay the fine and go" to the guy who was actually "wheeling" but whom we didn't have a clue about, being caught. He himself confessed he didn't know us when the cop asked him if he knew us or was part of our group. We looked at each other (as in ourselves) and were shocked to see how the cops handle situations so calmly, according to their own wish without a care for the public.

And off we go from the station after learning a lesson about not what we did, but what the cops and the uneducated public in that area did! We were aware of such "stories" the uneducated guys wanted to hear and be in so they could tell their friends about it, but we were never caught in one, and for no reason. This is a very sad incident which ruined our evening. This is the mindset of the jealous, uneducated, narrow minded people who want to cause trouble for fun and the cops who want to file a case on innocent people without a care for evidence or even an FIR to show off that they are doing their "Duty".

The lesson we learned - not to pull over in big/fancy/loud bikes for more than a couple of minutes close to well populated rural areas.

P.S. : The cops had a bit of a kind side when they told us that we were not at fault and that they knew someone else was caught doing wheelies and that we were in the wrong place at the wrong time. They said they took us to the station because if they hadn't, the people in that area would have beaten us, despite knowing we didn't do anything wrong, which was quiet true.
Sad to hear that mate. Somewhat similar situation happened with me. This happened in bhopal as i am studying here. Around a few months back there was this yamaha photo contest in which i wanted to participate. Around that time, my friend got his new gladiator. We started shooting the pics in the morning around 5 am when suddenly a PCR police toyota qualis came and stopped in front of us. First thing they did was snatch the bike keys, then they asked for papers and stuff. As the bike was only 2 days old we told them we dont have the RC yet but all other papers are there including sales reciept and everything. They didnt listen to us and took us to the police station. After reaching the station, they starting accussing us of being as '' Chain Snatchers '' . ( who the hell would come for a walk in the morning wearing a gold chain ) . And he said that we were in some criminal group as we both had our helmets and gloves on. Many arguments later, he took Rs 500 and left us. We had to pay because we were worried about the bike more . I could have done something and tought them a lesson as my brother is in CBI but unfortunately, my cellfone died because of low battery. Anyways my brother got to know and he took the necessary action and i got Rs 1000 back .

I hate these kind of policemen who accuse people for no reason

Once I was riding on a 4 lane national highway in the evening. I had my angel eyes ON which are Blue in color so as to increase my visibility and one stupid cop just jumped in front of me and pulled me over. tried to take the bike keys but they got stuck and then asked for my papers which were all in order. I asked if why did he jump in front of me his answer was blue light is not allowed and is illegal. I had to explain him the full law regarding the use of HIDs and projectors and that of angel eyes that these are not the lights being talked about in the law. fortunately he was quite understanding anf let me through....

Hi Arya,I have a doubt there is an opinion that blue light is not that penetrating as the conventional halogen in dark nights..esp., if it is a bit misty.....Oh man you got an understanding cop there..otherwise they will trump up some thing or other to extract maximum out of you.
