  • Bikes for tall riders

Please note: This is NOT a what bike query.

This thread is to discuss the apathy of the Indian Bike manufacturers to make bikes for anyone above the 5'10" frame.

Be it any manufacturer, they always ignore us, the tall people.

    Bajaj
    Pulsar family: too small
220: fairing interferes with tall riders knees.
Avenger: looks too small with a tall rider on top
Pulsar 135: anybody above 4 Feet looks like he is riding a miniature bike.

    Hero Honda:
Hunk: too small for tall riders
    Xtreme: acceptable
Karizma: default option for anybody above 6 feet
ZMR: again for people above 6 feet.

    Honda:
    Stunner: acceptable
Twister: anybody above 4 Feet looks like he is riding a miniature bike.
    Unicorn: too small
    Dazzler: again too small

    Royal Enfield
All models suit tall riders, but who buys REs these days?

    Suzuki
    GS150R again too small

    TVS
Apache family: too cramped for tall riders

    Yamaha
    FZ 16: too small
R15: do I even need to say a word?

So that brings me to my main question.

Why are manufacturers coming up with bikes of the size of Twister and Pulsar 135(both cramped) rather than coming up with bikes of the size Karizma?

Simple, they make bikes for the masses, not individuals. The product has to be designed keeping the larger section of population in mind and likewise the bikes are designed keeping the average height of Indian male population; and if you look around, you won't mind tall guys to be in majority.

i am 6 ft tall and using a P150, at time the handle comes to kiss my thigh at corners at less than 15kmph, but its OK, justified.

the market idea is 'tall people can ride small bike with some difficulty'
but the short people can't ride a tall bike at all.

i have seen a funny thing with short people riding tall bikes,
what they do is pull out side stand when coming to a halt even before landing their foot down.

anyway, the feiro F2 is also a good option for you.

GS150R too small? From where? It is one of the , if not the only, huge bikes available in India. If that's small, then I don't think any other bike will come any close. Not saying just because I own it, but ride it to believe it.

I'd say there is a similar situation abroad. The just launched CBR250 Motorcycle.com's review mentions it being small for a 6 foot guy.

Anyway I'm 6'3" and could not fit the 220 Fi due to the fairing digging into the knees so I got the 200 and feel fine. Though my friends say I look oversized on it.

                Bajaj
Pulsar family: too small - disagree, small but not too small. I went on a ride on P150 for around 400km in a day. I felt comfortable on it
220: fairing interferes with tall riders knees. - I agree on the fairing part but never had any trouble to say the bike is small!!
Avenger: looks too small with a tall rider on top - +1, I agree 100%
Pulsar 135: anybody above 4 Feet looks like he is riding a miniature bike. - +1, I agree 100%

                Hero Honda:
Hunk: too small for tall riders
                Xtreme: acceptable - +1, I agree 100%
Karizma: default option for anybody above 6 feet - +1, I agree 100%, I own one
ZMR: again for people above 6 feet.

                Honda:
                Stunner: acceptable ????
Twister: anybody above 4 Feet looks like he is riding a miniature bike.
Unicorn: too small - disagree!!! Its somewhere in between CBZ-X and ZMA!!
                Dazzler: again too small

                Royal Enfield
All models suit tall riders, but who buys REs these days? - I was comfortable only on the thunderbird

                Suzuki
GS150R again too small - disagree!!! Its almost the size of ZMA!!

                TVS
Apache family: too cramped for tall riders - I agree

                Yamaha
                FZ 16: too small
R15: do I even need to say a word? - small but not cramped. Well designed to suit tall guys as well..... at least for me it wasnt any trouble. Infact my bum thanked me for relieving the pressure off it!! Also the knee recess is perfect for me!!

So that brings me to my main question.

Why are manufacturers coming up with bikes of the size of Twister and Pulsar 135(both cramped) rather than coming up with bikes of the size Karizma? - there are more number people who want the size of Twister / P135!!!

I partially disagree with Rune. I'm 5'10 myself and in no way Unicorn or GS150R are uncomfortable for tall riders(6ft. and thereabouts).Based on my riding I have following experience-

Bikes for tall people- UNICORN,GS150R,CBZ XTREME,KARIZMA R,YAMAHA SZX and SZR.

Bikes for average height bikers(5'6-5'8)- DAZZLER,PULSAR 150 and 180,YAMAHA FZ series.

Bikes for short riders(below 5'5)- APACHE RTR 180

                      1. I have taken only comfortable seating position into account and nothing else.

2.Bikes not mentioned above have not been ridden by me so cant comment on them.

                      Cheers.

Frankly speaking all of them appear small when i sit on them, but am i uncomfortable? nope. they all work fine. its just that when i see my reflection sometimes somewhere the bikes look small

I am 6'1'", I own a victor. I am sitting on pillion (sic) and riding it . I have modified the position of the handle bar to make this possible. Only by this way I can avoid cramping my hip, thighs and ankle.

The TS has a valid point here. A manufacturer dosnt need to come up with a vehicle just for tall guys which is impossible, but can come up with adjustments on demand charging a premiumn for it. I would pay anywhere between 5-10k just if my favorite bike's manufacturer can do that.

Btw, I think GS150 is the biggest looking bike, there is a difference between looking big and being big. 'Being big' means the rider can sit comfortably with out curling his body. TS should try the impulse, when I TDed it I felt finally there is a bike where tall guys can feel be at ease.

The seat height / foot peg relative height or the vertical distance between these two determines how much a tall fella needs to curl himself, this geometry is spot on in impulse, its good for tall guys and short guys as well.

Do try out the impulse, if you dont like the off roader, karizma is the only choice.
Its crime to ride a car alone, so I ride bike :).

Well I am 6 feet 4 inches. And I think the Karizma ZMR was purposefully made for me. I once rode the stunner and got cramps in legs just after 10 mins. Other bikes I feel comfortable but other people say the motocycle looks like a cycle.
