  • Need suggestions for biking related books

I was surprised that there is no thread dealing with Biking literature.

So here is my query. What biking/motoring/riding related books will you suggest for a average rider, who is ever learning?

I am more interested in books that deal with the mechanics of our motorbikes, the engineering part if you will. Suggestions for books which do not fall into this category is also welcome as someone else might find the information useful too.(but it still has to do something with biking/motoring/riding)

So please pour in with your valued suggestions.

    EDIT: Quick List

    General read

    1) Zen and The art of Motorcycle Maintenance - Robert M Pirsig

    Techniques - Riding

    1) A Twist of the Wrist - Keith Code.
    2) Soft Science of Road Racing Motorcycles- Keith Code.
    3) A Twist of the Wrist II - Keith Code.
    4) Sport Riding Techniques - Nick Ienatsch
    5) Total Control: High Performance Street Riding Techniques: Lee Parks

    Technical Read

    1) Motorcycle Handling and Chassis Design -Tony Foale
    2) Performance Tuning in Theory and Practice - A.Carham Bell
    3) Sportbike Suspension Tuning: Andrew Trevitt

    Slightly OT: automotive documentaries/ movies

    1) The world's Fastest Indian

    2) On any Sunday
    3) Senna
    4) Closer to the edge, TT3d
    5) i.superbiker
    6) Fastest

Here are the 4 books on riding that you must have:

            1. A Twist of the Wrist - Keith Code.
            2. Soft Science of Road Racing Motorcycles- Keith Code.
            3. A Twist of the Wrist II - Keith Code.
            4. Sport Riding Techniques - Nick Ienatsch

There are plenty of more, but these are very good.

+1. Each of these are very highly recommended. Twist of the Wrist is also available on DVD. Grab a copy on ebay/amazon/torrent. Video's explain it well and its easier to get a hang of the techniques.

This is a good thread and some good suggestions on riding technique books. However, the first thing anybody will need regarding bikes mechanics is the Service Manuals. I don't know about Indian bikes but most of the popular foreign bikes have service manuals available on net to be downloaded. If there is one available for Indian bike, then this thread can be a good place to share.

A couple of books that I am currently 'studying'

1)Motorcycle Handling and Chassis Design -Tony Foale
2)Performance Tuning in Theory and Practice - A.Carham Bell

any newer suggestions regarding technical read, guys?

PS: editing first post to list the literature.

                          Add the following:

                          1. Total Control: High Performance Street Riding Techniques: Lee Parks
                          2. Sportbike Suspension Tuning: Andrew Trevitt

Both these books are excellent in their subject areas. I would consider the second one to be a part of the essential kit for all super bike owners. It will also be useful for everyone else in understanding how your bike's suspension is affected by various factors.

"The Road" is the best book & nothing else can explain better than taking the road yourself

somehow am never inclined towards reading, better as somebody had already mentioned...we have a huge encyclopedia of Internet, search for Video's which can explain better in terms of tuning / performance / technique etc than explained on a paper

More you ride, more you learn

Am a firm believer of the above point

I know ramesh sir, but the thing is the minute details are all missed in the modern mediums, and with my limited knowledge i can only make vague guesses while on road. learned me should be able to make a clearer guess if not the right guess all the time. and eventually it should (will) be the right guess all the time.

I believe that the books (should) have the answers to all the whys and whats related to the field. if not the answer then the best explanation possible.

and yes i am not talking about the techmax and nirali prakashan and what not books they have for us engg students

PS: mod sirs, are links to pdfs acceptable here?
