Disc ever needs replacement ?

    The Disc itself would need replacement only in case of 'Warping'..
    Warping is the deformation of the plate that can be caused due to uneven heating of the disc by the brake pads and a myriad of similar causes..

    The friction material on the brake pads we're being made of asbestos earlier. But since asbestos is carcinogenic, nowadays alternate materials such as ceramics etc are used.
    Fortunately, leather was never an option. The heat would fry the leather Im afraid and fires on the front end would have been a common sight on our roads

      AFAIK ceramics & all are stuff used in in high end bikes & not in our bikes.

      Besides for the metal plate below the pads to be able to scrub the disc the pads would first compltly worn out which should be noticeable by difference in braking & if its scraping disc then it would make noise which again can be noticed before major damage is done

        You are partly right in the sense that ceramics/carbon composites are used in making the disc itself for the Motogp machines.
        However, as friction material, ceramics and a bevy of such materials are used extensively in our homegrown bikes themselves.

          My disc pads are worn out and now when i have fitted with the new 1 , the braking is not as of discs. its makin "ghiss ghiss" sound and hav to pull the brake lever to the max .
          Mechanic told that ride it fa few days it'l be done.
          what should i do??? help needed

            On a comparo..you change the Brake shoes for a Drum brake..but seldom the Drum itself unless you have some damage to the drum..likewise Change the Pads or the cylinders for Discs and it should be as good as new..

            if you actually look at the disc, there's a minimum disc thickness mentioned on the disc after which its recommended to be replaced. After all its not that the only the brake pads wear out, the disc also wears out, but much slower.

            If you continue using a worn out disc, the brake caliper piston will have to displace the pads much more for the braking to be effective .. therefore you'll need to press the brake lever much more even if you have the entire master cylinder full

            even the rear drum brake surface (which is attached to the wheel ) (called brake liner) gets replaced sometime due to wear.

            although a typically good disc would not need replacement before 50,000 kms.

              Once I had delayed the change of the disk pads and the metal part had done the damage to the disk . After that I had changed the brake pads with new original ones but after sme kms , 'squeeking' sound arises.
              everytime i change the disk pads with an new ones after just couple of kms the same sound ariises.
              I hav touched the disk surface, grooves hav appeared, the area of contact is not even, its groovy. Braking is not compromised in any weather condition,though.

              has my disk gone damaged, can it be repaired? how? or I hav to live with it?
              I aint going to replace with new disk assembly,Its not feasible for me.

                      warranty doesnt apply to normal wear and tear of parts. unless the wear is too premature, if you've ridden 10k+ kms with the bike i doubt whether they'll agree to replace it.. try though !

                      but
                      first do this
                      -check the disc's thickness with a vernier's caliper
                      -see whether the disc is thicker/thinner than the recommended value

                      ZMA discs are also made by tata (tata will be embedded on the disc) and the recommended value is also embedded.

                      IF the disc is thicker (to a good extent) then have the disc surfaced evenly grinded to a smooth finish (so that the grooves get eliminated)

                      if its thinner or nearly equal to the minimum recommended thickness then change the disc.

                        Yes, if the wear and tear is abnormal,you can ask them to replace under warranty. Certain terms and conditions may apply though. Mail HH regarding this.
