  • Peak Power output at Crank Vs Rearwheel

    Hi,

    While discussing the newly launched Suzuki GSXR1000 and subsequent information gathering over the internet, I came across a MCN article which mentioned the peak power output of the GSXR1000 is 161 bhp. This was pretty surprising to me as I found it was way behind the 181 bhp genere of the R1 and the Fireblade.

    Further in the I came to know through discussions that it's actually peak power output of the GSXR1000 at rear wheel and not at crank.

    So, just for my understanding, wanted to know if the 181 bhp of the R1s and the Fireblades is the power at crank, then how come the parasitic loss of power through the transmission is a massive 20bhp?? Is it normal??

    • Yup!! The 181 bhp of R1 or the Fireblade is also at the crank. At the back wheel r1 2010 is around 157 and Fireblade is a bit more.
      The R1 is one of the lowest in terms of BHP. But both in R1 and the Fireblade (specially Fireblade) that this power is very usable unlike probably ZX10R which is around 10-12 bhp more but it is not that usable atleast on streets.

      The difference in the BHP at crank and at the back wheel is generally around 17-18 bhp depending on the bike.

      That is why in every test, every magazine, every website you will find a different bhp no for a bike.

      • yes that is very normal. all the horsepower figures that you see being advertised are done at the crank. real horsepower is always at the rear wheel on the dynos

          R1 with the big bang motor has the lowest quoted figs, pre '09 ones had bhp figs in the ballpark but they were pretty unusable,

            Well I've a weakness for the R1... inspite of it's uncivilized nature, I'll still choose it amongst others (unless the BMW S1000RR is in the scene)

                Same is with Me. I have always loved and dreamed of R1 but now BMW S1000RR is latest crush. Although I have developed a thing for the Fireblade too.

                  • R1 is for pros like the two in that video... people who are so used to superbikes that they want more... Its a very nice bike, R1, but for people like me, who are not used to superbikes, fireblade makes you feel like you are pro at superbiking.... and the moment you hop on to R1, your pride comes crashing down..

                    • I have a Michelin Pilot Power for my 08 R1, any idea how does the tyre behave in wet conditions(specifically during rains)?

                      The threads are in a good conditon and the bike has clocked around 5000kms on the same tyre...

                      Any suggestions on tyre which can be used in the wet and dry conditions, i have heard abt dual-purpose tyres but unaware of how effective they are?

                        Very nicely put there Fireblah. Only a person who has experienced both the bikes can give such insight, and you are probably the best person to comment on the difference here!! Both the bikes have carved there own niche amongst bikers and the final say really rests on personal choice and ability to handle each of them.

                        But I'm pretty sure, that first riding the Fireblade and now riding the R1, you are a pro already

                        Try Bridgestone BT010. Not the right guy to comment here but I've heard good things about BT010 from some of my friends abroad. Again, not sure if it's available in India.

                          So the engine must be producing atleast 200 ps of power!!

                            • Pilot powers are fantastic in the wet. they are a sport/road tyre so are essentially a dual purpose tyre. however dont expect them to hold up as well in the wet as you do in the dry
