I kept asking many people about how to get rid of the rust inside the tank, everyone kept saying change the tank. The external of the tank can be repainted but nothing much can be done about the internal rust, thats the answer I kept getting. Everytime changing the tank due to the rust is not a smart thing.
So I did a research and found few tips which would be helpful for people who want to take good care of their machines and also for people who are restoring old bikes.
Here we go, the following are the steps by step procedure to get rid of the rust inside the tank
-Remove the tank from the bike
-Drop some screws, bolts, nuts. Screws are more preferable since it has sharp ends.
-Pour WD-40, almost 100ml to 200 ml
-shake the tank with lid and the petrol tap closed, shake it well so that the liquid and the screws reaches all the parts of the tank and then allow it to sit for 24 hrs or longer, shake it once in few hrs. You can also use some other techniques for shaking the tank like fastening it to a movable object instead of shaking manually.
-Drain the wd-40 and take out the screws, you can use a long chain instead of screws as you ll have trouble getting the screws out.
-Pour water and soap solution in the tank shake it and drain it, keep repeating this step until the water is as clear as it went in.
-Dry the tank with compressed air, remove the petrol tap, lid and blow the compressed air from all the possible opening. One can also keep the tank in the sun to dry but, make sure the paint doesn’t get faded.
The inside of the tank gets rusted only when there is not enough petrol in the tank, this allows the moisture in the air to come in contact with the walls inside the tank, try doing a full tank everytime you refuel, by that way you can stop further rusting. Due to the low quality of fuel that is available to us (in terms of octane rating as well as clean fuel), it becomes essential for us to see to it that the carbs remain clean all the time, which is why we need to use good petrol filters, and a regular tank clean-up.
