  • Beat the Heat while Riding

As the summer approaches, here are a few quick checks and tips that can go a long way in helping you stay safe and have another great ride no matter how hot it gets out there!

Layer Up - Keep your skin covered at all times and especially if the heat has low humidity and also in order to reduce water loss from evaporation. Try light mesh clothing for daily commutes but proper textile jackets for long distance riding. Choose light coloured gear than darker shades as black and dark shades absorb the sun's rays and heat up quicker.

Get in the shade - Stop frequently to rest and refresh your self with a drink or water. Try to find shade and cool down.

Chill Out -Stay Hydrated -'Check Up' time - Before you hit the road, give a thorough check on the motorcycle as well as yourself and your kit. Ideally, make a check list and stick by it! Check for correct maps, ear plugs, tyre condition, oil levels, brakes, chain etc.

One tip from my side: Every one hour, stop and have some water. Doesn't matter whether you are thirsty or not. It helps in hydration.

Some tips from my side for summer touring:

Ride strictly between 4PM and 11 AM, i.e. at timings when the sun isn't harsh / night time. Take a nap at the dhaba you stop for lunch (Thats where 'Khatiya wala Dhaba's are so immensely helpful). Thats the best way to spend time between 2PM to 3PM.

If riding during daytime is a necessity, ditch that fancy Mesh Jacket and get yourself a good-ol' textile jacket. Or else, it will leave you dehydrated before you can say 'Deh'.

Adding to the 'riding blind' bit, use high quality polarized sunglasses only (they start from 800ish). Sunglasses without UV protection will harm your eyes even more. SPF15 shouldn't be required if your entire body is properly covered.

If I have to tour in the summer during daytime, I carry 2 x 1 liter bottles of water wrapped in a Towel and a pack of Glucon D in the tank bag. In fact, many consider 'not carrying a water bottle' as the cardinal sin of touring. Use one bottle at a time and buy another one as soon as you finish one. This helps you get cool water whenever you stop, and you don't run out of water if you happen to finish your only bottle and happen to be in an area where human settlements are hard to find. The Glucon D is for the instant dose of energy when you need it the most. Believe me, in the heat, you will need it sooner or later.
Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

+1 to above specially the gluconD, water bottle and textile jacket part.

one more suggestion, a few packs of wet tissue papers goes miles in refreshing you.

Here is something that is very useful to beat the heat: Cool Vest for Heat Stress Relief, Motorcycle Cooling Vest: Veskimo Personal Cooling Systems. Admitted that it is expensive and not for everyone, but its a solution and very good solution at that. I have been using one for 3 years now and its never failed to keep me comfortable.
