  • What does Ceramic Coating do? advantages / disadvantages?

    Dear Friends

I use a Royal Enfield Lightning 535, few days back my trusted mechanic called me from Chennai and said something about Ceramic Coating. He also mentioned that there is a company in Jodhpur who are experts in this, I missed the conversation and went into my routine work. Recalled this stuff today and thought of Googling it and looks like this is one which would be of interest to you guys too.

Not able to understand what would be the advantage / disadvantage, few have mentioned its a wonderful find, but couldnt find much details (or lazy to search around)

Can somebody through light which would be of some use of all & I too can understand a little out of it

      Temperature Ranges

For many years, the only coating able to withstand the high temperatures of many motorcycle parts was chrome. As new technology improves the formulas and application methods, ceramic coating is becoming more popular. Depending on the formulation, ceramic can withstand from 600 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. Exhaust pipes, manifolds and headers become hot, and the choices for coating are limited. Ceramic coatings withstand the extensive heat generated by these parts and can lower the temperature of the part. Most ceramic coatings are also smooth and reduce friction when used on engine parts such as pistons. By lowering operating temperature, it is possible to increase the amount of oxygen available to the engine, which can lead to increased performance.

      Color Choices

Ceramic also allows you to add color other than chrome to your engine and exhaust parts. It has become common to "black out" bikes. Although ceramic does not come in a huge variety of colors, there are still many colors from which to choose. Most ceramic colors come only in 3 to 30 percent gloss. A higher gloss factor will not hold up to heat and, over time, will experience dulling. Keep this in mind when planning a color scheme. NIC Industries has a line of ceramic that comes in bold red, yellow, blue and purple as well as black, silver and various shades of brown and green, which can withstand approximately 1200 to 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. NIC has a formulation called Chromex that is similar to chrome and withstands about 1300-degrees Fahrenheit. Chromex becomes more shiny as you work it. Using a Scotch Brite pad or a vibrahone, you can attain a high level of glossiness.

      Durability

In addition to being heat resistant, ceramic is durable once cured. It is resistant to scratches, impacts and corrosion. Some ceramic coatings are more resistant that others. Special "high humidity" Chromex can withstand up to 3,000 hours in a salt spray test. This test is used in the coating industry to determine durability of powder and ceramic coating. Depending on whether a primer is applied, most air dry or oven cure ceramic coatings can withstand from 350 to 1000 hours in a salt spray test.

Whoa!! looks like quite informative. Now the question is...does motorcycles in India come with ceramic coating? can the same be applied on the Cast Iron machines too (or consider any machinery which gets heated up soon)? if that can withstand heat & help increasing performance, why does the ceramic coating done only on silencers / muflers why not the entire engine?

Why Ceramic Coating for Exhaust/Mufflers -

The fact that exhausts often pass near important components means that ways of protecting these components from heat soak are especially important. As a result heat management is used as a way of reflecting, dissipating or simply absorbing the heat.Heat shield is also useful to reduce under-bonnet temperatures which therefore reduces intake temperature, subsequently increasing power. (wiki)

Unmanaged heat can be a huge problem on many performance machines. Exhaust metal temperatures approaching 1000 degrees C in confined engine bays can fry nearby electronic/electrical components, rubber hoses, seals and engine mounts. Even fuel in tanks can boil causing severe engine power loss.
(Performance coatings supplied and applied: ceramic thermal insulation, lubrication, heat loss and anti-corrosion.)

            Chromex - 1300 Degrees -
The very popular appearance of highly polished aluminum. The only choice for show vehicles, street rods, off-road vehicles, ATV's and all marine applications.

            Satin Fresh Blast - 2000 degrees -
With the appearance and feel of freshly sandblasted metal, this coating is ideal for a clean, "Fresh" look. Also available in a semi smooth finish we call Shiny Aluminum. Same color, different surface finish.

            Satin Tungsten Grey - 2000 degrees -
NEW! Designed to replicate brand new, stock cast iron exhaust manifolds. A dark gray/brown look. Great for hiding casting flaws and pitting.

Satin Black Velvet- 2000 degrees -
NEW! Very dark, smooth and 10% gloss. Classy, clean look almost replicates porcelain. Very popular on manifolds, headers and especially motorcycle exhaust.

            Satin Black - 2000 degrees-
A very stealthy, flat black look. Popular on motorcycle exhausts and turbo applications. Looks great on stock exhaust manifolds too.

            Satin Titanium - 2000 degrees -
A medium gray with a hint of gold/brown, almost a tan color. Designed to look like bare titanium. A favorite with motorcyclists

These coatings possess excellent thermal barrier characteristics, providing a dramatic reduction in radiated heat. This means reduced under-hood temperatures, accelerated exhaust gas velocity and a longer life expectancy for the entire exhaust system, not to mention their chemical and corrosion resistance. Some exhaust can sustain temperatures upto 2000 degree(Farenheit)

            Process -

All pieces are first sandblasted with garnet and walnut shell media inside and out to ensure the removal of any foreign matter that could impede proper application, and then re-blasted with aluminum oxide to give the surface the perfect tooth for the coating to adhere. All pieces are then coated inside and out to seal in the metal, protecting them from rust and corrosion, and giving them the best possible performance properties.
            (performance)

            Why in Engines -

Frictions should be reduced and a solid film of lubrication can protect the parts from wear and damage. (Swaintech.com/racecoatings).

Besides that, other parts that run in close proximity (i.e. Spark Plug wiring, starters, oil pans, electrical connectors, fuel lines, and especially engine sensors) will experience significantly less damage due to heat fatigue. Your other engine components and Accessories will last longer also.

In fact, overall under-hood temps. WILL drop. In many cases, this will reduce the amount of heat being sucked into your engine Intake- *a secondary performance effect.

Summary: Take full advantage of that stock OR performance aftermarket
            Exhaust or intake system.

Today's coatings are extremely durable. Depending on the specific
Coating, the process used, and the type of part coated, coated parts can
Experience added life spans of double to 10-times that of uncoated parts.

Note- This informations were already available on the internet. Just making the informations available to my Biker bro's.

'Madhavan' bro tried to find the Ceramica coatings for bike body finish but every time i came up getting info. about Powder coating the bike. Please confirm is it 'Powder coating' or 'Ceramic Coating'.

Hope this gives some info. Takecare

Looks like it is a very old discussion. But I recently learnt about ceramic coating and was wondering if I should get it done on my R3. Just wanted to check on few questions before going for it, please suggest based on your experience. What is the difference between ceramic coating and glass coating? Which one is better? I have 2 detailing places here in Pune.. one is doing 5 layers of ceramic coating by Autotriz a German brand and will cover everything on the bike except exhaust and engine along with IR curing and the process will take 2-3 days and has 4 years warranty. And the other one is doing a simple simonize glass coating, an American brand and will not cover engine, exhaust and rims. The process just take 2 hours and comes with 2 year warranty. Which one should I go for? The latter is 6 times cheaper than former. Please suggest.

Autotriz is a reputed brand. They are also certified by "tuv sud" company which is germany based certification company and best after sgs. Go for autotriz in my opinion it will be a good investment. Gyeon coatings are also good and cheap try to source one if available in your area.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I did go for Autotriz and got it done last month. It's holding up pretty well so far. Your reply confirms it was an investment well made [emoji4]

I have a 2013 Classic 350, and I want to black out the exhaust and the bend pipe. Exactly like the Stealth Black models. Is ceramic coating the way to go about this? I know powder coating won't last, and neither will using a heat resistant paint.

Ceramic coating is for paint protection and restoration. For getting the engine and exhaust black you will have to go for powder coating.
