A1. Yes, very much so. Thats the reason why the exhaust of our bike costs around 8k to replace. Why would it cost this much had it been made entirely out of say, mild steel?

A2. A Catalyst, by definition, doesn't react chemically with any of the ingredients of a chemical reaction. It just facilitates / speeds up the reaction. So, if at all the platinum is lost during the course of usage of the bike, it is due to mechanical stresses due to heating/cooling (expansion/contraction) and not due to any chemical reaction.

Technically, as Antz.bin mentioned, Catalyst does not take part in the reaction in the sense that it is consumed. So that should not cause the platinum in the cat con to diminish over the years. However there may be ways in which the effectiveness gets reduced. By products of the reaction covering up the catalyst over a period of time is one of the ways how that can happen.
