oh man! those pics are making my mouth water. hey can you overall your gearbox while you're at it? and post pics!

thats a lot of carbon on the piston and the head. have you cleaned the exhaust valve? how many kms has your bike done? is it chewing up oil by any chance?

Hey Rohit, nice work. Don't be disappointed about the snapped head bolts, I broke the clutch lever yoke and 'lost' a few washers and nuts while dismantling my RD too! It's in the 'chassis, engine and other parts' stage right now. I have taken off the heads and barrels, but I've left the rest of the engine stay in one piece. Will get it done in a few months by someone who knows better. Don't want to screw up anything.

By the way, I didn't know there would be so much carbon on a 4 stroke piston. My bike's pistons have somewhat the same amount of carbon too. Ofcourse I'll get them changed on a rebore in a few months (they are standard now), but do post how to decarb properly. Will help a lot of people.

And can you people explain the blowing water through the exhaust thing a bit more? I mean, how much water and how do you blow it? - MAX.

carbon seems excessive for a lean burn 4st.also scbeat off the deposit with a broken ring or a blunt hackshaw blade.try soaking the parts in a mix of 2t oil and petrol,i've heard it dissolves carbon well.check the ring end gap.
Max u need to check the compression and ring gap before a re bore.if comp.is fine stick to the originals,if ring gap is bit over get new rings and it'll be fine.u always don't need to re bore.

Removed the carbon on squish band with screwdriver+wd40 all night. However my carelessness showed when i accidently dropped the camshaft from a height of 2 feet[xx(][xx(], now will this drop require me to change the camshaft bearing(small) or should I continue with it and see what happens?? Also while checking the free rotation of the bearing it mildly locks up after 10-15 rotations.

dust might have entered the bearing, try cleaning it and oiling it.also never use a screw driver etc to scbeat carbon.u have to see the play if any of the bearing.

Rajnish, I assumed that a rebore is necessary cos :
-There is lots of play between piston and cylinder, so much that the piston can be shaken inside the cylinder.
-Checking a lot of things, I have come to the conclusion that the bike has been running in this original state for the past 20 years of its existence and from the black colour, the pistons look more like they've been put in fire (lack of maintenance I guess).
-In any case, I am not dismantling the engine. Once I finish restoring all the other parts on the bike, I will take the engine to Ron and let him do whatever is necessary.
-I showed the barrels to a couple of mechs and they swear that it's not sleeved. I am wondering what's wrong! I got a bike on standard barrels and pistons?! Sounds a bit too weird! Will have to take pics and show Ron to know if its a sleeve or not.
