  • Think about it: Bikes for the Differently able

    Hello,
This may sound as morbid, I know a person who lost his leg below the knee. He was a passionate biker before that unfortunate incident. Quite recently I have come across Honda VFR which has auto transmission. So does it imply that the gear system of the VFR is to simplify it, as simple as a scooty? and lets say a person who is partially crippled go for a ride on it?. My friend has an advance ankle unit[some fancy American stuff] he can walk and run only gear switching movement is a solution. So the question is the automatic transmission enough to give previous bikers a second chance? from being limited to scooties? and the disability thing in getting licences? one can always work through it.

Yes it may sound odd and almost nonsensical but accidents are part and parcel of the Indian roads, and there may be a day when one of your limbs are gone.
But hopes are always there. .
I think at least I hope that there be a discussion on getting erstwhile riders disabled by unfortunate events into the place where they previously loved, on the saddle of a powerful bike.

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

HAd seen a program in Discovery A man who was passionate about bike met with an crash and he lost his left hand and leg entirely. But his right hand and leg were absolutly fine!!

So he got his bike re desgined for brakes and clutch in hands, it got autotransmission and rear brake and front was in front right hand. This bike din't had any supporting tyres.

But in your friends case, will he be able to brake by his feet ?? which is there. And if he is challenged by both legs then he can use VFR with additionally added tyres support. BUt he has to brake from hands only. Don't know whether VFR has rear brake in legs or in hands making it full scooty type function.

the solution is very easy, and applicable to almost all bikes. your friend can change gears with hand also, somewhat similar to geared scooters, you have to modify the bike accordingly, there are readymade mechanical as well as electronic shifter modification parts available. just search it on google.

Thanks for the response, my friends left leg below the knee is replaced the other leg is fine. , usually he does shift gears on normal bikes by switching off his ankle motor, which means his leg becomes stiff as a jodhpur leg and he can thus shift. But thanks, so in case one gets his limbs torn apart solution lies in getting an autotransmission and shifting controllers to the hands. Sweet. Though I would shudder to think if anything happened like that in real life.
