Welcome to xBhp Forums v2020

Welcome to 2020 Edition of the xBhp Forums . As you might have already noticed, the forums have undergone a major upgrade to keep up with the times. This will make the forums faster and intuitive and much more mobile friendly.

    this kit incresed my initial power for rtr 160 by abt 10% n fuel efficiency by about 5% for more details please pin me...!

        HI Raj, Very few people have the resources and also the know how of how to forge pistons. Could you elaborate more on what way you got the piston made. The cost involved and can they make a piston of any dimension.

            @Rajsteelsprockets: You don't have to reveal anything related to the trade secret but a bit of info on what exactly you did how did you do it.. looks like RRGS piston however i am no expert in this division.

              Nice work on your engine upgrade.
              No piston can withstand a bad tune, I've seen JE forged pistons with holes melted straight through them, others that have been melted in half, Yes these are extremes but never underestimate the destructive power of a poorly (lean) tuned engine with the combustion temps higher than the forged alloy's melting point.

              I'm using a 66mm RRGS forged piston in my 200cc engine. It doesn't look like the one in the pic, Then again there are numerous types out there.

              Can you explain what a "Semi Forged" piston actually is?
              I'm aware of cast (factory), Hypertectic (cast with metal inserts) and forged (heated, forged with big press, tempered etc)
              Cryo treatment of a cast piston will help increase its strength (providing it withstands the cryo process)
              Where about is this semi forged piston sit in this lineup?

                @shiv18 de whole mystry beind these is dat de high compression helps u to burn more air at a faster rate so an increase in fuel efficiency n initial torque...i.e it does nt struggle when carrying wieght r in a hill station in simple words...! it is as simple as dat bt de pison of this kind is semi forged which mean's it is more stronger dan which de company provide's n reliable until n unless u do a good running n set de barrel ....!

                  @mad mik forged simply mean's a strong piston which does nt crack etc etc... u just google only about forged type u will undestand better ...! den if u undestand wt forged is i'm pretty u will undestand wt semi forged too ...n forged piston's ar used in diesal engine's due to de high compression ratio....!to withstand de pressure...!

                    Thanks for the explanation but a true "forged" piston is not the same as other pistons.
                    Forged piston starts off as a cylinder of alloy, cut to size with a saw, goes through a series of presses, compressing it to shape, numerous firings/heat treatments before being turned out on a lathe to specs. Basically squeezed together making it a more dense and heavier piston.
                    A cast/stock/factory piston is poured into a mould then machined to spec. Much lighter and weaker.

                    Forged pistons metalurgy is different again to the cast pistons.

                    Forged pistons expand more than cast pistons.

                    I'm well aware of different pistons and different engines, My job entails maintaining diesel engines (V6-V12, supercharged and turbo charged)
                    Diesel engine pistons are vastly different to a gasoline piston engine. Piston crown is larger on diesel Vs petrol as the top ring lands are further down the piston and the gudgeon pin is further down the piston than on petrol pistons.
                    I also use JE pistons on my car engine builds so I know a thing or 2 about forgies, Semi forged on the other hand......Sound like something a marketing department made up.

                      @rajsteelsprokets; first of all, please do not use SMS lingo in the forum. Please take the effort of writing in proper English. Now coming to forged pistons; forged pistons are not just simply stronger pistons, they are pistons made through a specific process called 'forging'. Forging can be of various methods i.e. cold, warm or hot. The process creates parts that are stronger than parts made from casting or machining. The process is intricate and at the very least requires a drop hammer, dies and proper tooling.

                      edit: I was still typing while Mad Mik posted his reply. His reply is even more appropriate. Just calling a piston forged does not make a genuine forged piston.

                          Sir, Even I was stumped by the "semi forged" term. I have people in my friend circle who are metallurgical engineers for generations and they are yet to hear about this. I guess this has to do more with the marketing gimmick as you mentioned. Since everything about the pistons and the posts seem to a top secret not much of knowledge to be gained from the thread I suppose

                            I had asked my dad about 'semi forged' (he used to work for Wyman Gordon) and his take on the whole thing was that its a misnomer. According to him what it actually means is 'Semi-solid metal casting' process. A variation of this process called Thixomolding is where room temperature metal chips are fed into a heated to semi solid state and pressure fed into a die thereby making the end product better in terms of properties such as mechanical, pressure and tolerances compared to traditional casting.

                            So the piston is not forged as most marketing departments would have us believe.

                              That process sounds like a Hypertectic piston. Its what engine manufacturers (cars esp) use for their "performance" engines, ie supercharged or turbo charged without having to pay for expensive forgies.
