Re: When did you motorcyle's engine seize?
It is not advised to rev a cold engine to higher rpm. It cause more friction thus more wear(especially in a new engine). Take it easy for the first 3 kms to attain proper engine operating temperature and oil flow.Originally posted by phoenixflight View PostCan you please explain the portion highlighted in bold.
Extended full choke application (idling @ ~5K rpm) on a cold engine in neutral can cause more engine vibration wear and damage than riding it at higher speeds.
Edit: Its perfectly normal to use choke at cold mornings. Crank the engine @ full choke. As soon as it get started adjust the choke to find the rpm not above 2K mark and let it stabilize.Last edited by mid; 05-16-2013, 06:12 PM.

The reason I asked is because, most manufacturers recommend the use of the choke during cold starts. On some motorbike models there is even an auto choke present which increase the rpm during the initial period of start up.
Also, experience shows that the choke, does not increase rpms to 5k. It should increase rpm upto 3k and not more.
However, I do not think this is a reason for a siezure. I guess for the engine to sieze during idling with the choke on, means it is an abused engine. And even if you started without the choke, the engine would have eventually seized a couple of kms into your ride.Last edited by phoenixflight; 05-16-2013, 06:16 PM.Phoenixflight.

Choke varies bike to bike, or even on same model according to the linkage adjustment/ air temperature/ other factors. My uni used to go as high as 5 k rpm when the choke was applied. some times at 3 k but raises as the temperature increase. I adjusts it under 2K rpm under cold start. Why hesitate to adjust the choke to adequate level if you are provided with that option.Originally posted by phoenixflight View PostThank you.

And there need not be a single reason for a seizure. More likely a combination of different issues can also cause it.

Re: When did you motorcyle's engine seize?
This is a Nostalgic story, dates back to 1983 while riding a 1978 Bajaj Chetak (first model with a square headlight) me and my brother was on a 100 km ride, nearing our destination, we are doing around 60 kph, when the rear wheel suddenly locked and luckily i managed to control it to a halt in a straight line. i tried to kick it but the kicker was struck. those are my early days of biking (scooting?) and no idea what went wrong. so after a while i tried to start it, after several kicks, the engine started but there is a significant loss of power with lot of whitish smoke from the exhaust, we managed to limp to our destination. after inspection at a repair shop its found that the piston lock pin came out and created a groove on the cylinder wall. we got the cylinder, piston and rings changed. Couldn’t remember how much it cost in those days.Biker of the Year -2013
