  • Home brewed cafe racer based on a zma

    Hello fellow motor enthusiasts!

Welcome to my cafe racer (ish) build on an 04 HH Karizma zma. I'll start with some history and couple of pictures.

The bike was bought by me from a friend who was in India at the time. He had a nasty crash just before I bought it. I was riding a 89 yamaha rx100 at the time and would have given my left leg for the bigger, better zma. I actually did have to bargain my leg into the equation, which I broke in a crash with a cager who was in too much of a hurry to notice a bright blue motorcycle with its headlight flashing coming towards it.

Long story short - the bike lay for a while as I recuperated from the injuries and as soon as I was off bed rest I got the bugger repaired from a local mech. I continued to ride the zma with a crutch strapped to the rear grab rail, but soon it started to give me more problems than my woman and I got a brand spanking Yamaha r 15 in yellow. The zma seemed like a scrapper now and only my will to keep it gave it a new breath of life.

Plans to do up the zma came and went, the bike managed a ride to manali and back too. Its electrical's died on me on the way back near mandi around 2230 hrs. No headlight, no starter, over heating - not cool. It stood for another year and a half, draining its oil from the block/ clutch cover and without any electrical signs.

Moving on to 2013, couple of friends from my local riding group and some more were informed on the condition of the bike and my plans for a cafe ishtyle motorcycle. After a lot of hoo-haa's the bike was transported to an empty house in the ncr and work was finally under way. We had some stripping and grinding to do ..

I'll now let the pictures do the talking. My apologies if I wasted your time or bored you with my useless rant. I do promise you that this build would turn up as quite a looker and with the right budget quite a performer as well.

Attached are pictures from the first day of work. Basic strip down and design confirmation. The bike has moved along and is completely stripped and waiting for its engine, chassis and suspension work to commence. I'll get pictures when I get to the bike in another day or so.

Please do give me your vital feed back, opinions and suggestions. I can use all the help I can get. Finally, thank you for visiting my build thread have a good one ..

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Very very interesting. How many kms the engine clocked? Did you do any mods to engine? Certainly I am glued to this thread. :-)

And very sad to see the old horse in the crappy condition. :-(

The engine was at 65k when I stopped using the bike. The only mods are cbz valves which had to be put in due to the timing chain snapping and bending the valves on a road trip. I do plan to send the engine to bangalore for some of Joel's magic.

Work is on, not to fret, it will be back to its former glory and then some.

I'll update with more pictures and juicy information tomorrow ..

          Hi mate

Your thread came in as a welcome surprise for me as i am also working on a CBZ cafe racer.
More or less we have the same story........or rather very much in common.........i also met up with an accident with my CBZ and broke my left leg and was on bed for around 2 months. Later on as life progressed i bought FZ16 (first one on xbhp) and CBZ was left to no use by me. Meanwhile CBZ gathered all the dust and rust all this while till the day it just struck me to bring her back to life.
I have also stripped the bike to bare bones and currently hunting for the required parts.

Attaching an image of how i intend to make the final product to look like.Click image for larger version

Hey man, the envisioned final design is looking good. Wishing you the best for your bike. I get a good feeling when I see this awesome moto culture developing in our commuter centric environment.

What parts are you looking for? It's quite easy to source parts for a minimal build like this. I'm looking at scrapped r 15 parts for the swing arm, front yoke, forks and wheels.

Tail section would be fiber glass, seat pan would be sheet metal, stock tank and lots of tidying up. That's basically what I plan.

I'm a little late to go to the build site, I'll be posting the updates later today.

              Ride on ..

Very interesting thread. I would love to see someone build a real cafe racer karizma, apart from the boring bullets. With the right dope in the engine, this is a very potent motor. Still one of the best budget cruisers available in the country and reliable too.

Hi Bro...threads not going anywhere............put in some pics.

I understand that this is a minimal build for me and the parts can be sourced easily. The issue is not the availability of parts but the availability of time :P.
I am quite occupied with work these days.....so not much time to look after the build . Shall try to workout time and start the build ASAP.

Till then, keep updating your progress with the build.

                    Keep Riding!!!!
