  • High Octane Petrol Availability

I have booked a KTM 390 and eagerly waiting for it's delivery.

KTM 390 has a high compression ratio and recommended fuel is 95 RON. [i know that it will also run in normal gasoline]

I'm currently living in B'lore and now a days it has become very difficult to find even premium [ron 91] petrol.

I was googling to see if there is any option to get high octane petrol in b'lore and came across this intreresting discussion - High Octane Fuel - Team-BHP

    Now my questions are:

    - have any one tried this approach [adding toluene to increase octane level]?
    - is there any reliable outlets/chemical shops available in b'lore that will give me pure Sulphur free toluene [& at a cheaper rate]?

From my understanding, there's no 93 or 95; there's only 97 from BPCL

premium petrol manufactured by oil companies in india is ron 93 and 95,beyond this all are loaded with ocatane boosters from companies itself u can even get 97 but it is either 93 or 95 +octane boosters

i remember reading this on the ioc website
and i think that 93 and 95 are being sold only in bs-4 cities - and chennai complies with bs-4

IOCL STILL...sells 91 RON under Xtra Premium & so does Shell; AFAIK, 93 & 95 were short lived.

One easy way to remember 97 RON is that, BPCL was supplying free 97 RON petrol to Sachin's Ferrari for which you & I had to pay Rs 70 when the regular fuel was priced around Rs 55

What's the rating of the Shell Super Petrol, 95? Luckily I have one close to my home in Varthur Road. No other pump in the area is stocking anything other than normal petrol.

This Shell site does not mention the rating Overview - India

                  AFAIK, Shell super is
91RON with additives. The only high octane fuel available in india is speed 97.

                    Re: High Octane Petrol Availability

After a lot of searching, asking, roaming, researching and internetting the only conclusion I can come to is:

The only high octane fuel sold in India is Speed 97. Even though Speed97 is not exactly RON 97, it is atleast 93/95 with additives. All others are 91RON. Full stop.

FYI, Shell super or normal shell are both 91RON. Any others claiming to have higher octane rating are only normal fuel 91RON with additives.

                      Re: High Octane Petrol Availability

I have found only one fuel station in B'lore that sells Speed 97.

BPCL Petrol Station [Nagpal garage] on residency road [near brigade road].

@aargee, I am so much confused looking at these numbers, Can you put in layman terms please. I have seen the 95+ RON rating on Z800 fuel tank. All I wanted to know is, what is the RON number for the Unleaded petrol and Speed that we get from BP. Also if you could tell me what is RON number for the Shell Super available.

                        I saw in this website
http://transportpolicy.net/index.php...l_and_Gasoline, where the Gasoline (BS-IV) has a RON of 91. Does it mean that Speed is 91 RON + Additives ?

In delhi i have seen many indian oil pumps selling 93 octane. They just call it 93 octane and it is generally 3-4 rs expensive than 91(regular).

Higher octane means more time, pressure, spark required to burn the fuel. So 91 RON means it needs more time, pressure & spark to burn than 88 RON & viceversa...87/88 RON burns much easier compared to 91 RON. From BS3 (now BS4) in effect, its mandated to supply all petrol available in this country with 91 RON & so does all manufacturer adhere to making engines work with 91 RON.

Earlier all engines used to have 8:1 or 9:1 compression ratio; Compression ratio is a way to measure how tightly the piston squeezes the air inside the engine. Compression is the amount of the air fuel mixture is compressed before the spark plug ignites the compressed mixture. During the intake stroke a specific amount of air/fuel is drawn into the cylinder. At the bottom of the stroke the intake valve closes and the piston compresses the mixture. The compression makes the mixture more volatile and when ignited it will expand more quickly thus giving you power on the downward stroke of the piston. The ratio is the amount of compression that is done. If you take 9 cubic centimeter (cc) of air and compress it to 1cc then your compression ration is 9:1

For instance, say your CR is 8:1 & you use 97 RON, the fuel still ignites, but doesn't burn efficient & at the same time making your vehicle least efficient. OTOH, if your CR is 13:1 & use 88 RON, your vehicle will experience early combustion as the fuel is more volatile & by the time the compression reaches 8/9:1, the fuel catches fire even before the spark plug fires. This illustration is for your understanding purpose only.

Shell super is 91 RON. Additives what Shell claims are not same as RON, SHELL claims to give additional protection for the engine (the last time I heard they saying the piston & cylinder walls don't rust & I was shocked hearing & I precisely knew what they were b*crapping)
