  • Hero CBZ Classic Rebuild (2001) - Bigger and better!

It all started way back in 2001 when I was in my first year of Engineering. CBZ and Suzuki Fiero were the only new bikes that offered more than the regular 100cc.
Compared to the Splendors, Bajaj 4s and Caliber they were miles ahead at that time.

So one fine day on 1st August, 2001, I get a call from my dad on the Nokia 3315 ( yes..Nokia 3315) that we need to go out somewhere quick. So I rush home and sit behind dad's YBX. On my way I kept asking him where we going and he kept saying "Shut up and sit. Its a surprise". First stop a Suzuki Fiero showroom!!!!

I just couldn't stop laughing and dad smiled too. So we head in and I gawk at the Black Fiero (At that point of time all I knew was it was 150cc and looked practical). Dad in the mean time talks about the features and numbers with the showroom guy. We have a brief talk and at one instance we both have a grin and decide to go look at the CBZ!!!!! ( She was a looker in those days!!!)

I quickly jump on the rear seat and visit the only Hero Honda showroom at that time. And there it was where I experienced love at first sight! Tell dad I want the CBZ. He smiles and starts talking numbers to the showroom guy. To my utter delight, the guy says there is one available right now and we can take it. Dad pays the money and does the paperwork and finally she's mine! It was since then, she has been with me, riding me along to all those tuition classes, evening hangouts, weekday trips after bunking college to weekend trips with my friends. She's taken all I put her through with great ease and reliability.

Over the years I moved on to other bikes and still she was there at the side always ready to go. But after 13 long years her age started to show and was she was desperately in need of a make-over. I kept on restoring the other bikes that I had bought and for some reason always believed the CBZ would be just fine.

I recently bought a Duke 390 and went home to show it to dad. So after reaching home, I see all the bikes being in pristine condition and there in one corner lied the CBZ with dust all over it, rusted and pretty banged up. Something inside me hit me hard. The next morning I take her out and give her a wash. That's when I realized the extent damage and my neglect had damaged the beauty that I once loved. Decided then and there and she needs to be restored back to her original glory or even better if I can help it.

I and my brother had bought a Karizma bike from the RTO auction sometime back. The back of the Karizma was crushed from the back-end as per RTO policy. However, we could still use the engine and the carbs etc. in case we run into any issues for the Karizma by brother had.

That's when it hit me. I had read on forums some people have ported the Karizma engine on the Impulse. I asked myself why cant I do the same to the CBZ??
A quick call to the mechanic and my doubts were cleared!!

    Hunt for the spares began.

    Sourced from Pune -
    1. Karizma wiring.
    2. Karizma CDI unit.
    3. Karizma battery charger.
    4. Karizma Ignition coil.
    5. Karizma Sprocket Kit.
    6. Karizma Timing kit.
    7. Karizma Valves.
    8. Karizma Clutch side yolk and lever.
    9. Karizma Self motor ( was not on the engine when we got it )
    10. Karizma Engine casing.
    11. Karizma Clutch plates.
    12. Karizma Intake manifold.
    13. Karizma bearings.
    14. Karizma engine gasket kit and oil seals.

    Parts from Aurangabad.
    1. Amaron 9 Amp battery.
    2. All original fiber body parts. ( This was a pain to find. I was able to get them but each one is in a different color :P)
    3. Sprocket rubbers.
    4. Rear Axle.
    5. Michelin Tyres.
    6. Handle grips.
    7. Handle bar.
    8. Rubbers, tail-lamp and nuts and bolts.
    9. Foot rests.
    10. Air filter.
    11.CBZ Classic meters.
    12. Used CBZ tank ( the one I have is rusted pretty bad)
    13. My brother's Karizma exhaust which he was kind enough to give it to me. He uses an after market one he got made for his ZMA.
    14. Karizma Usha piston (0.25mm).
    15. Break pads.

After 3 days of continuous work, gallons of water, 100s of cigarettes later the CBZ was ready. The only thing that remains is that she needs to be painted. I have decided to paint her the OE silver color. The plan is to paint her along with the RD ( currently in the rebuild process) sometime after the monsoons.

    Cheers,

How does the bike handle the last time I read of someone attempting something similar the bike had way too much power and was difficult to control .

She still is. Till date Hero or Honda for that matter, has not been able to make a better looking bike in my opinion.

Karizma makes 17 odd bhp and that's not way too much power

Same thing happened to me. In these two years, one day i saw my CBZ laying there with dust and suddenly something happened to me, I started to restore it
Congrats zohaibak on your work. Do post pictures.

This is what she looks like right now. Hunted a lot everywhere to get the OE fiber items in a single color, but could only manage to get them in 4 different colors!!

The engine was a direct fit. The kick-shaft and the gear lever were a direct fit too

In the pic above, the tank is pretty banged up. Got a used tank for 800 bucks (someone had replaced during their insurance claim). It only has some minor dings on it and those can be easily fixed.

Few things that still remain are -
              1. Paint job ( OE Silver or Yamaha Blue) to be done in Sept.
              2. Karizma Carb cover (small plastic thing on the carb).
              3. New indicators - As of now the ones that I have still work. Will put the new ones on at the time of paint.
              4. Procuring the OE stickers set that I would need after the paint.
              5. Giving her a name!

The only think that I ever liked in the Karizma was its engine and that's now her. She handles great and is smooth as hell. Drove her 250Kms from my hometown to Pune a few days back and can't wait to get her run-in done. 70Kmph is like a breeze right now. At idle, you cant even make out if she's running.

Waiting to see people's faces on Apaches, Pulsars, Bullets, FZs, Karizmas getting overtaken by a humble CBZ.

I now have a very very reliable tourer and city commuter that can whip up a frenzy in no time :P

super awesome work bro... did the ZMA engine go through an overhaul ??

a few important parts i see missing in the list are the

                  1. fork seal/ fork rods ( zma ones are a direct fit)
                  2. coneset replacement... been long time it was parked... change it asap..
3..now that you have ZMA engine.. change the wiring to all DC and move to a 55w bulb setup.
4..rear drum brake pad... front disk pads ( change to dot 4 oil) cbz came with dot 3. check for wear and tear in front hydraulic hose. bleed it well for removing air.
master cylinder kit comes for hardly 180 bucks. if you buy locally. change that too if needed.
                  5. next oil change move to synthetic oil.

                      5. next oil change move to synthetic oil.
The engine went through a complete overhaul. New 0.25mm pistons were put in. All bearings were replaced. Crank was checked to make sure everything is fine. Typed and timing chain were replaced. New clutch plates, engine packing etc..the works.

                      1. Fork seals were replaced.
                      2. Already done.
                      3. Will not tinker with the original wiring of the ZMA. Put in a 9 Amp batter and will move to HID.
                      4. Front pads were a pain to find and freaking expensive (Rs. 980 OE). Rear brake liner, bearing, sprocket rubbers etc were all change (that's mandatory after each service).
                      5. She's currently running on Motul 15W50 double ester. Have done 300Kms on the ODO after the build. Will change the oil at 1000Kms.

                      Cheers,

This one shows the love for your bike.
I think it looks better with those 4 different colors, adds identity to it.

Re: CBZ Classic Rebuild (2001) - Bigger and better!

Going a bit OT but I still have to name the CBZ ( Yes, I know it sounds girly. No, I still want to name her). I always referred her as Darling or baby. But this sounds too generic.

So as for as naming bikes go, I fall to Greek / Norse mythology characters and try to find something that fits the bikes personality.

                          1. My RD is called Cupid - Anyone that looks at her falls in love.
                          2. Yezdi is called Hades - I love the way it rides and says I give a damn about anyone else.
                          3. Enduro is called Loki - The Norse god of mischief. The name says it all.
                          4. Duke 390 is called Arion - A divinely-bred, extremely swift immortal horse.
                          5. Bullet G2 is called Black Widow.
                          6. GTS Bobby is called Robin - The sidekick
                          7. RXZ is not named yet. It was an impulse buy and I'm gonna sell her off as don't want to restore one more bike as my brother already has an RX135

That leaves the CBZ. I've narrowed down to these three names -
                          1. Duchess - A real classy name.
                          2. Black Caviar - A very famous race horse
                          3. Cigar - A very very famous race horse.

                          What you guys think?

                              I like this.

                              Else:

                              Aphrodite - goddess of love
