  • Authenticity of "Alpinestars Fending Air jacket" at PlanetDSG

Recently I spotted an "Alpinestars Fending Air Jacket" at PlanetDSG (Pune) store which is priced at Rs.11999. Link:

    http://www.planetdsg.com/alpinestars-fending-air-jacket-red-p-1745.html

This particular jacket is nowhere to be seen on the official Alpinestars website or any other outlet / online outlet in Rest of the World. It is ONLY FOR SALE in India, Malaysia and Indonesia. This jacket comes with a "Made in Indonesia" tag.

There is an online outlet in Indonesia named as Proriders-shop claiming to be an official dealer for Alpinestars and MotoGP clothing and accessories.
Alpinestars Fending Air jacket could be seen on Proriders-shop website as well.

So to make things clear I sent an email to Alpinestars to confirm
    1. whether this particular jacket is authentic or not
    2. is it exclusively available for India/Asia market

Here is the email reply I received from Alpinestars:

I decided to do this because I bought Alpinestars boots and knee guards (from PlanetDSG) and I was concerned about the product authenticity as the prices at PlanetDSG are comparatively lesser than the European/American market for the same product (considering the applicable shipping charges, import duties and other taxes)

Note: I am neither promoting PlanetDSG nor I work for them. This is an individual effort. And this is the information I have gathered.

    GBD approved!

Seems Pune members have decided to debunk all myths/facts! Great going. Let's have a discussion on this.

Nice thread Ameya. BTW, all the A-Star jackets we get here are mostly manufactured in Indonesia.

I have a T-GP R Air, and it is manufactured in Indonesia. I bought it from PlanetDSG only. As per the prices, yes they are less keeping in mind the shipping costs, import duties and other apllicable taxes. But when you convert the products' USD prices mentioned in US sites (Revzilla) you'll see the prices are almost the same. So it can be said that for supplying to Asian markets, A-Star manufacture their products in Indonesia which will in turn reduce the transportation costs also.

Also, when you import something in bulk, the buying prices are actually less. Being in the procurement section I'm aware of these scenarios. When we order in bulk, over a longer period, we get a lock on the buying cost. Like, we ordered for something in bulk amount over a year's time period and the cost per unit is fixed at, say for example, INR 100. Now, once the contract is signed, we will get the products at that cost only, no matter if the cost goes up to say or down for the vendor. Also you can include in the contract who's gonna pay for the the shipping costs, import duties and other apllicable taxes, the buyer or the seller.

So getting A-Star products at the same price as that of US is not abnormal. But still we need to find out the authenticity of the products sold here.

We all spend our hard earned money on all those so called 'Safer' riding gear so we have all the authority to confirm their genuineness. After the recent debacle about LS2, we have decided to question everyone and everything.
