• Suggestion Needed : Recording Engine Sound

This is for the a/v experts here. I have a weird requirement - I need to record the engine sounds of 6-7 different motorcycles under static (Neutral) and in movement.

Equipment:
I will be using a regular Android device with a good recording app which can record raw 16-bit PCM WAV files at 48000hz. The app also features + and - Gain Control to keep recording sound levels under control.

The static part has been a piece of cake so far, but the situation gets a bit tricky on the move. I need to get the engine notes in the clearest possible manner. I ahve tried the following methods without satisfying results:

1. Keep Phone inside jacket/pant pockets : Not sure how, captures lot of wind noise.
2. Wrap phone in plastic and keep in pockets : Very muffled sound, sound unsuitable.
3. Keep phone inside saddlebags : Too much resonance and reverbation, sound unsuitable.

Anyone with good audio experience, can I have some pointers here please?

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

This is interesting! I'd be interested in knowing the solution. Just a random thought, can we remove wind noise using some editing software?

How about sticking a Bluetooth head-set in an appropriate location near the Engine/exhaust or some where the head-set captures the best sound? (some trial & error) but be careful while fixing/sticking the head-set, don't stick it directly to the surface of the engine/exhaust, use some insulation to prevent melting the head-set!

How about trying to wrap up the phone in a foam(low density) like in the case of a real microphone and stick it somewhere near the undertail section.

RoyalJordanian channel in youtube has a video as how he records the engine sound while driving, Cant find the link, may be you can try searching in Youtube in his channel, He talks elaborately about the gears used for that. That could help you a bit.

Thanks TheArcher84 and frankpilli. The bluetooth idea seems like a very practical idea, and (god forbid) if the headset falls off enroute while recording, my pockets would would hurt much less than losing a phone!!!! Will give it a shot today, this project has been long pending!!!
