  • Difference between Iron & Aluminium cylinder block

I wish to clarify my doubts about Iron and Aluminium cylinder blocks in bikes. I read that Aluminium blocks result in better heat dissipation, but they also get heated quickly as compared to Iron blocks.
Also, Bajaj have gone back to Iron block for their to be launched Super100 bike, citing reason as uniform operating temperature. On the other hand RX100, which has Aluminium block, gives decent performance. So which one of the two is better ?

Aint that good at answering this, but i'll try.

The caste iron engine takes a longer period to heat and a longer period to cool as well.

The Aluminium blocks provide good lean, burn. They heat up and cool quickly. Accordingly they result in good acceleration and mileage than a caste iron block. They are the preferred ones among the two.

You are abolutely right Rash! They are said to be the long timers, and what better example than that of a Std 350 Bullet.

only the outer block is of aluminum.. the sleeve however is of cast iron.. aluminum engines are lighter too..
but i feel they are more noisy..
yes performance and mileage is better..
but cast iron blocks can be tapped , and machined(if reqd)
            aluminium blocks cannot
