How will a traffic accident FIR proceed in India?

@-Mods: Wasnt sure whether to post this in General Discussion or in Help me. Please relocate the thread as you see fit.

So my question is: What should I do after a motorcycle accident? How will a traffic accident FIR proceed in India?

<<>>This question is purely for my knowledge purpose and would like to know all the legal processes regarding motorcycles.

So the scenario is: I get into a motorcycle accident with another person who is either on a motorcycle or in a car. The other person is at fault. There are NO injuries on either side but my Motorcycle is damaged. What should be the next step?

Provided the culprit has not yet fled away, should I call the police and ask them to send a patrol unit? Or should I take a picture of the culprit’s face and vehicle registration number and go to a Police Station and lodge an FIR? (this situation came up in my very First Accident but I did not have to File an FIR as the culprit accepted his mistake and paid me the amount for the damages)

After lodging an FIR what happens?

P.S-1: I have had 3 accidents till now. But in none of these accidents I had the need to file an FIR. So I am curious what happens legally after filing an FIR. Also how is a 3rd party claim done?

Please do guide me step by step.

P.S-2: I know the easiest way to get out of this mess is to just claim insurance but thats not my question here.

            Thank you!
