  • Date a Bike - Bike Rental In Chennai Experience

Mods, Please move to appropriate category if this doesn't belong here

Hello Bikers! Here comes a post from me after a long time. My bike riding wasn't taking any new shape in my RTR 180 rather than some short 100kms trips ocassionally and my FIAT is eating all the share of ODO. With the biking scenario heating up in India by global manufacturers launching their powerful motorcycles here I wanted to try my hands on above 600CC motorcycles. Though I would like to invest in such a bike, it doesnt make sense for me as I won't be riding much due to chennai's pretty weather and with so many nice places to ride to every weekend. Ya! I'm being sracastic obviously. But I always used to dream about riding such machines as any other automobile lover. I heard about Date-A-Bike (Hire Harley - Triumph - Royal Enfield Bikes in Chennai India | Chennai's only rental of Harley Davidson / Triumph & any Royal Enfield bike Hire Harley - Triumph - Royal Enfield Bikes in Chennai India) bike rental being launched in Chennai and saw its FB page. One fine evening when it was suddenly pouring on a hot summer month of May by God's grace, my friend gave me a call and asked for a bike ride the next day. We initially planned a short ride but the bike rental idea just struck me. I gave a call to the phone number listed on Date-A-Bike website. Mr.Girish who attended the call was very courteous and told me that he has continental GT and Harley street 750 available for the next day. I finalised on the harley and told him that I would take the 10hour rental and would want to pick up the bike at 7AM. He offered an option of dropping the bike at door step for a small charge, but I wanted to visit their shop just for the experience and also to see what all they have on offer. So fixed the appointment for next day 6.30 AM.

Me and my friend arrive at the rental place which is attached to the fuel station next to neelankarai police station on ECR. There was a beautiful harley 750 matte black as good as new waiting to be riden by me! I was all excited! I'm going to ride a big bike for the first time in my life. Went inside the shop to finish the formalities. The process was very easy than I imagined. I just had to swipe my credit card for caution deposit of 15,000Rs and sign few papers which has the usual clauses like they are not responsible if I make an accident or involve in illegal activities etc. The process was over in quick 5 mins. I just had to give them my original ID proof and they took a photograph of me.

The shop is very well done up. Chennai XBhpians you should definitely visit this place. It sells riding gears and also has a small cafe. Let the pics do the talking.

Keys were handed over and he gave me a brief about operating the machine. We also rented LS2 helmets for 300Rs each. We dropped the apache there and started harley for the trip. Oh ya, the TRIP! where to?? we have 10hours in hand and we have enjoy the day to the fullest. Time was 7AM and bike has to be dropped around 5PM. Ok, with such beautiful weather, we decided on yelagiri which is 250kms away from Chennai.
Slotted the machine on first gear and was very scared to disengage the clutch, but contrary to what I thought, it was very easy to handle. My friend was pillion and we took neelankarai-tambaram-walajabad-kanchipuram-vellore-yelagiri route. By the time I reached tambaram I got well accustomed to the bike. I rode till kaveripakkam toll and stopepd there for breakfast. Time was around 9AM The bike attracted too much of attention with people taking photographs. Many came to us and enquired about the bike. We were celebrities for a day . My friend took turn for his share of riding and we reached yelagiri by 11.30. Just had a lassi there at aavin stall, relaxed a bit and started our return journey. It was my turn now to ride back till kaveripakkam toll. We stopped for lunch at Ambur for biriyani. The same celebrity treatment prevailed there too We were back at neelankarai by 4.30 PM, well ahead of scheduled time. They just had a small inspection of the bike and cancelled the deposit amount on my credit card. We just had to pay the rental for 10hours and the helmets. Experience with date-a-bike is 10/10. Thy made my dream of driving a big bike come true The renting process was seamless and I would definitely go back next time for the bonneville. It makes sense economically for me to rent a bike such as harley than owning one for occasional use.

A small review of the harley 750
The bike we rented had 4000+ kms on the odo and was in top notch condition. This is the first and only superbike ridden by me, so I loved the power. The beauty of the bike was above 100 kmph. It kept on pulling, smoking Rapids and Vernas trying hard to compete with me. I was able to touch a speed of 140kmph at an emptry 6 lane stretch after vellore. Any one who is renting a bike from these guys, I would suggest to rent the riding jacket and gloves as well.

With all the good things explained, here comes the cribbing. Me being more than 6 feet tall it was very uncomfortable for my right leg as the brake lever was a bit above the foot peg and my ankle started to pain. Driving comfort was pretty much fine but it should be very comfortable for riders less than 6 feet tall. The worst experience was when I sat as a pillion. It was next to impossible because of the high set foot peg and the situation was aggreviated further with no back rest. The fuel tank capacity is very less and to top that it gave a mileage of 20kmpl which required us to top up the tank twice.

Here are some pics from when we dropped the beauty and headed back home.

Yes, they do sell gears too. It is a nice good hang out place for bikers.

My experience with them was very good, and I hope they maintain the same level of service with time.

The cost is as given in their website. They do give a 30% discount on weekdays. So after discount rent of the bike for 10 hours came to 3000Rs. If you want jacket, helmet and gloves it comes to 900Rs all together. Then cost of the fuel at 20kmpl. I did 500 kms in 10hrs that comes to 25 litres of petrol or roughly 1800Rs.

Hey are there any big bike rentals in Chennai? I cannot seem to come across any which give out any other brand apart from harley, somethin like kawasaki or honda or truimph street triple types, honestly very disappointing to know.
