  • Performance Bikes: Sub 2 Lakhs: General Bike Buying Guide

    Hello guys.
And welcome to this new (sort of) thread that I'm trying to create in which the entire community comes together and debates about bikes.
Share your pros and cons of each, your views etc.
Basically the purpose behind this thread is that we all(the community that is) already does all of the debating and deciding, and so that the newbie can just read the thread and make up his mind.
(PS: Disclaimer: If this thread is successful, I might do more of these)

    Anyways, I'll kick things off.

    Karizma
+ Touring heritage, might be the most comfortable bike to tour on, time tested,
    - underpowered, hideous

    P220
+ Proven, good lights, good engine, best pillion comfort
    - engine not as powerful as the new 4 valve 200, fairing rattles, vibes

    AS200
    + most powerful engine
    - awkward riding position, too tall, awkward placement of the gear lever and the rear brakes, something for which the AS owners are still finding a solution, lights not as good as the 220, despite having a projector, very short geared(4000RPM the bike does around 59kmph. Now the P220 used to do 64kmph at 4000RPM.), front heavy, so a problem in the city, fairing rattles, vibes, "Huge turning radius, like a truck"

    ns200
    + powerful engine,
    - same as as200, wind blast, doesn't get a projector, slightly more maneuverable.

    Bullet standard 350
    + its an enfield
    - its an enfield. Waiting period is insane.

Why wasn't xyz bike included? I have included only those bikes which are under 1 lakh, ex-showroom. So no ZMR, No R15, no RS200, no CBR150R, no Enfield Electra, etc etc

My pick of the lot: Probably the P220.

Please use this thread to list out the merits/ demerits of all performance bikes in the sub 2 lakh category. Do not indulge in brand bashing. Preferably post only about motorcycles which you own and not what you have heard from others. Thread will be closely monitored by me. Irrelevant posts will be thrown out without a second thought.

This thread's purpose is to direct repetitive questions asked in the 'What Bike' section. So please try to make your posts as comprehensive, covering all the aspects that a newbie requires.

Follow the format below. If you have anything besides this, then please feel free to add in your post.

    Thanks

    Model
    Year (Month) of Purchase
    Price when Purchased
    Current Odo Reading

    Would you recommend this motorcycle

Biking is not about what you have between your legs, its all about how well you use it!!!!!!!

Give your details here if you want to help your fellow xBhpian stranded in your city

.Loved the + and - of Bullet.Hilarious !! If you are taking a Bullet,Get the Standard 500.It's 1.6L Onroad.IMHO,P220 is a bit very old and long in the Tooth but a Great Bike though.Just keep an eye out on the Rims,Suspension and Engine Head (Cuz you don't wanna see them flying off)As for the NS and AS,They have this Alloy wheels breaking and Flying off.Real Serious Quality Issues. As of now,Stay away from Bajaj.Karizma is a Great Bike yet again a Bit very long in the tooth but wait for the HX250RR - Cuz of EBR in it.Other Bike ? Try TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS.A Great Bike but Recently just now It has been Confirmed that a Newer RTR (With a Performance Boost)is coming on January of 2016 and TVS Draken is also coming possibly on Feb-July of 2015.250cc no....300cc No..No sure but I am sure it wil be priced under 2L.

Actually I wanted to keep this sub-1 lakh, else I would have included the R15 CBR 250, CBR150, Duke 200, Duke 390 Karizma ZMR too.

But well, you are the mod, you are right.

Re: Performance Bikes: Sub 2 Lakhs: General Bike Buying Guide

            Model : Bajaj Pulsar 220
Year of Purchase : Jan 2011
Current Odo Reading : 61,000 kms

            Positives :
Comfort for both rider and pillion, Top speed, Torque, VFM, Straight line stability, One of the best lights till date, Performs very good on highway, A very good proven tourer, Decent FE for the performance it gives, Very few or negligible hassles/issues till 35K kms.

            Negatives :
Handling (one of the worst), Huge turning radius, Bad rear brakes, Hates traffic, Quality, Starts consuming oil after some certain Kms - started at 32,000 for me, Needs replacement for a lot of parts once 35k kms is reached.

            Rating (on a scale of 10, 10 being best) : 8.5
Major Expenses incurred if any : Bore, piston rings replaced at 40K kms.
            After Sales Service : Average
            Parts Availability : Very good
            Mileage : 35 - 42 kmpl.

What improvements you want in this model :
Better brakes, Better handling, Better engine quality so that it lasts much longer. (I guess these have been slightly taken care in the latter Pulsars)
And Bajaj for Heaven's sake reduce the freaking turning radius in your bikes !!

Would you recommend this motorcycle :
Yes. Its a total VFM, i don't really find a bike which beats the Pulsar 220 (overall) except for maybe AS200.

It's a lot like nuts and bolts - if the rider's nuts, the ride - bolts!

Well, I got mine for 99,800 in 2011.
Depends on the states and taxes! (Though ZMR v2 would cross 1 L now)

Model - Hero (Honda) Karizma ZMR
Year (Month) of Purchase - January 2011
Price when Purchased - 99,800 approx
Current Odo Reading - ~78000 km
Positives - Touring comfort with ample power and torque to munch miles at 100 kmph 24x7. Great mileage for its class courtesy FI.
Negatives - Ridiculous fairing and RVM design. Not quality wise, but functionality wise! AND candle like headlamps.
              Rating (on a scale of 10, 10 being best) - 8/10 overall.
Review - P.S the ownership thread.
Major Expenses incurred if any - Not yet, but soon the clutch plates and sprockets shall be changed. They are still stock!
After Sales Service and Parts Availability - Was bad until recent times, have been hearing of the same having improved. Yet to procure parts.
Mileage - Lowest: 33 kmpl during run in, highest: 57 kmpl (75-80 kmph for 250 km on a winter morning)
What improvements you want in this model - Redesign the fairing and RVM design! 55w lamps.
Would you recommend this motorcycle - Absolutely yes, but only the version I have! Newer versions had issues and they're being sorted out.

                Model:
                Karizma ZMA-R

                Year (Month) of Purchase
                November 2009

                Price when Purchased
                84000/-

                Current Odo Reading
                85000 kms

                Positives
The best tourer bike under 1lakh
                Comfortable in City and Highways
Relaxed upright sitting posture and comfortable pillion seat
Can cruise all day in 100 kmph without any stress on the engine
                Engine Refinement
Classy design...well this one differs from eye to eye
Good low and mid range power (without compromising on the reliability)

                Negatives
Fairing rattles after little off-roading, prone to breakage and costs a bomb
Spare parts are costlier than competitors (Better quality though)
                Stock tyres are ridiculous
                Ineffective stock headlamp
Could have been a little more powerful, feels sluggish with pillion

Rating (on a scale of 10, 10 being best)
                8/10

                Major Expenses incurred if any
Nothing other than clutch plates and chain sprocket
I don't want to mention other modifications as I made those on my wish rather that the motorcycle asking for it.

After Sales Service and Parts Availability
Not so good. Haven't checked in last 1 year

                Mileage
highest 44kmpl (Chennai to bangalore), lowest 25kmpl (Was running rich after changing the carb)

What improvements you want in this model
Better quality fairing connectors. The fairing itself is not so bad but the way it is bolted to the body is not appropriate.
                Better tyres and headlight

                Would you recommend this motorcycle
                Oh Yeah!!!
But sadly it is not available anymore...
